Hello, I've just acquired this coin, and after much searching online, I cannot figure out what it is. It is gold, but the clear issue is the 1970 stamp. I've searched for repro's, and found absolutely zilch. The edges are sharp, as it was set in a gold bezel. It weighs in at 15.4gr. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, B
Welcome Barry ... cool coin => and although 1970 may be considered ancient to some folks, this baby should probably be listed in the "world coin" section ... Cheers, coin-brother
Ha! I hear you. I wasn't sure because the "Z.1970" looks somewhat "fresh". Not sure if it was added when the coin was put into the bezel/pendant, and is a much older coin or not. Cheers!
About half way down on this page, you'll find what you're looking for: http://www.rhinocoins.com/ITALY/VENEZIA/OSV5.HTML MARC ANTONIO GIUSTINIAN 1684-1688 LEGEND DEO DVCTA DVCES M V M ANT IVSTINIANVS VIEW OF ST MARK`S SQUARE WITH FLYING ANGEL AND WARSHIPS / DOGE KNELLING RECEIVING THE BANNER FROM SEATED ST MARK ISSUED TO COMMEMORATE THE UNFORSEEN ELECTION OF THE DOGE WHILESHIPS WERE READY TO DEPART TO FIGHT A NEW CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE
Since that is not really an ancient coin, I would not suggest you to hold the coin that way. There is not enough patina on the coin to block out fingerprints.
I know nothing about the date inscribed, could have been a reproduction, or someone really thought they had an important year to put in the coin. I actually knew nothing about this coin prior, I just pride myself in my google skills. Cheers.
Appreciate the input. I had come across that page in my search as well, but as a skeptic at heart, I always look for factual reinforcement before I can accept something as authentic. I spent much time looking for reproductions, but couldn't find a thing. Again, thanks for the kind help. Cheers, B
Just so you know, the more info you provide, the better people here can help you. If you were to share that link and say you found it but wanted to see if it as a reproduction, you might get more responses from people not interested in doing the research but might have an opinion on the strike of the coin.
I'm not an expert in Venetian oselle, but that piece does not appear to be of 17th century facture, IMO. A little searching around reveals this similar copy of an osella for sale on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Venezia-Ven...02?pt=Medaglie_e_Lingotti&hash=item19cea78ef2
