Writing to a Horace Thomson in Kennebec, Maine, Snowden writes, "I have received your letter of the 11th inst, but I am not now the Director of the Mint. For the first time in the history of the Mint partisan politics has been extended to it. I was removed by President Lincoln because I am NOT a member of his party.
