A new arrival. Nothing rare but another pseuso random purchase. I was attracted to this coin by the details on the Genius. It has a very attractive deep chocolate brown patina but does suffer from a flan flaw on the chin on the bust but I can forgive this minor fault. I loved the detailing on the cornucopia, looking like an oversized ice-cream cone.

    Galerius - AE Follis
Obv:– IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, Laureate head right
Rev:– GENIO IMPERATORIS, Genius standing left holding patera over lighted altar
    Minted in Antioch (Creascent | B / ANT). A.D. 310-311
    Reference:– RIC VI Antioch 148a

    Flan flaw on bust.

Other than the chocolate patina, this coin looks like it was just struck. Very nice. Great detail. I even like the flan flaw. Looks like he's drooling.

Nice details on that chocolate coin. Whats wrong with a little drool on chocolates? :D

Absolutely stunning new addition, Martin (sweet!! ... I'm very jealous of that baby)

=> ummm, I also have a fairly sweet Galerius example to share (sure, it may not quite be in your new coin's league, but perhaps my coin could still hang-out with your coin? ... kinda like the fat friend?)

Nice coin Martin! That reverse is exceptionally sweet. I've got several Galerius coins, mostly coins that were mis-attributed as Maximinus I and II when I bought them.

Thanks to you and Doug for setting me straight! Here's one of them.

    Galerius; AD 297-298
Bronze; AE Follis, Heraclea mint; 29mm/9.2g
OBV: GAL VAL MAXIMIANUSNOB CEAS; Laureate Head R
REV: GENIO POPULI ROMANI; Genus standing Left holding patera and cornucopia

Test time: Which of these belong to Maximianus, which to Galerius and which to Maximinus II?

    3.Galerius
    4.Maximianus
    5.Galerius
    6.Maximinus II
probably wrong, but fun all the same

My first stab though after a cursory look though:

    #1 & #3 are Galerius.

    #6 is Maximinus II.

Jury still out on the other 3.

Is the trick that the quarter follis from Siscia that says MAXIMIANVS AVG is actually Galerius?

No one has them right but there is at least one right answer to each coin. I really did not think this was that hard but I felt a little bad about the trick which zumbly saw immediately. Except for that tricky one, YOC was right on all. Trick #2 was that there were no coins of Maximianus. The first and last were Maximinus II while all the rest were Galerius. Perhaps I was too hard on that dealer who mixed these up if so many of us have the same problem. The basic rules are:
If it says Maximinus (not Maximianus) it is Maximinus II.
If it says Caesar or some abbreviation of Caesar it is NOT Maximianus.
If it says GAL and Maximianus it is Galerius.
If it says GAL it can not be Maximianus.
If it says MA (Marcus Aurelius) Maximianus it is Maximianus.
The quarter follis (#4) of Galerius with simply MAXIMIANVSAVG is a tricker and there are a few others that you have to go to RIC to get but most coins yield to the above rules.

Just goes to show how many of us were paying attention in class. Or even attended the class to begin with. Thanks for the quiz!
