    Hello,
I am going to buy a new metal detector soon and was just wondering what everyone preferred. I have a Whites Spectrum XLT that I have been using for the past several years but the screen is starting to go and you can only hear it if you are using head phones so I was going to upgrade. Before the XLT I had a Garrett that I kiked also. Any help would be greatly apprciated.

Know there are better models (Whites, Minelab, Fisher, etc.) available, but for me it's a Garrett 2500.

My son uses one he bought at Radio Shack, probably their "best" model. It was inexpensive and he seems to have great success with it. It doen't have the reputation but seems to get the job done.

I use a White MXT. It takes a while to get familiar with and at first I didn't care for it (no tone id) but after some use I really like it. I also have a Radio Shack model that I use as a back up or my son will use once in awhile. My best advice is to not "over buy". Find one that has what you need and are looking for, alot of the bells abd whistles are never used under ordinary conditions. Mine has a gold prospecting feature that I'm sure jacked up the price but in reality I will probably never use. Almost all the better quality detectors will be more than adequete for normal searching, In my experiences alot of times it's not the detector as much as the type of coil you are using that seems to make the biggest difference in a good day of hunting and a so-so day. I have searched places with 1 type of coil and found nothing, switched coils and start getting hits all over. Do a little research, as it appears you are, and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

PS> Be realalistc about how much you will use it. Do you know how many wheaties you need to find to pay off a $1000 detector, ALOT!!

Thanks for all the help. I am sure i paid fot my last detector over and over again with all the coins I have found. Many of them I have sold as common silver and a few of the better ones I have kept. One thing about detecting around here is that most places have been searchhed in the past but thankfully the ground freezes and thaws several times during the winter months and place that have already been searched yield many new finds. Thanks again, Fastfun1111
