That gold stater is stunning AJ. Here's a coin that spoke to me since I started collecting ancients. Augustus; 22-30 AD (minted under Tiberius) AE As; Rome Mint; 29mm/11g Obv: DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER; Radiate bust Augustus right Rev: PROVIDENT S C Facade of Ara Providentiae Augusti Double Panelled Door and Horns Above (Sear 1789, RIC I 81)
Funny that when I look at US coins now; especially in the SLQ, I definitely see the influence of Greek and Roman coins on US coinage. A lady holding a shield and/or an olive branch...now where have I seen that before?
Here are the coins that really spoke to me personally. I also have a few bronze coins, but these ones really stand out more I think.
All of my coins spoke to me at the time I got them, but it is true that a couple dont speak to me as much, like they did anymore. This little guy still does though. It still is a favorite of mine. L. Roscius Fabatus denarius serratus C. 59 BC 15mm 3.89g Obv: Juno Sospita right in goat skin headdress, control symbol behind.( a cap?). L ROSCI below off flan. Rev: Maiden feeding serpent, FABATI in ex. Control symbol behind (club?) Crawford 412/1. Sydenham 915. RCV 363. Unsure of control symbols.
My situation exactly. Every so often I get home from a show and wonder just what was I thinking but more often a coin that I considered marginal when I got it gains in my view over time. I recently completed going through every coin I own and repackaging them for easier transportation. Part of the process was to identify coins I wanted to get rid of but very few got the axe. More were identified as something I need to rephotograph.
great coin, mithridates ... man, I hear ya => I have a similar example that never shuts-up!! .... you have great taste in coins, my friend!! (I'm jealous of your coin's "FABATI" .... my coin's name is cut-off)
Sure, I admit that I've bought quite a few coins during the past four years that have flirted with me and sucked me in with their clever seductive coin-talk ... ... but you're 100% correct Doug ... => some of them end-up losing a bit of their initial-alluring-luster (a "3" dressed-up as a "9") ... Oh, but then there are a select few examples that keep-on chatting to me (I love the chatty coins) ... here are four of my complete mouth-pieces!! (they never shut-up!!)
A lot of coins speak to me when I see them, unfortunately most of them are too high maintenance for me to take home. The only one that I did manage to get recently as many have seen already...
Here's my Alexander III stater and it spoke to me from a Heritage auction. These are very difficult to find with everything on the flan on both sides. On mine, the crest is fairly complete, but the tip of the helmet is off the flan. I especially like the symbol to the left of Nike on the reverse. It's the head of a satyr looking upwards. If he were lower and to the right, the dirty old man would be looking up Nike's dress!
