Romulus, son of Maxentius, AE Follis. Rome mint, ca 309-310 AD. OBV: DIVO ROMVLO N V BIS CONS, Bare head right. REV: AETERNAE MEMORIAE, Domed shrine without columns, RBP in ex. REF: RIC 207 Rome, Cohen 6. I was just offered this coin for $65. What do you guys think? The coin needs some light cleaning and it'll be fine I think but I doubt it will improve much. This coin may very well be a slot filler for me and a decent one at that considering that these coins get very expensive.
A hard coin to come by. It is most probably worth the price except if that is BD. If so, the damage may be more than you think.
What I was gonna reply too. Even if it's treated you have to worry about it coming back. I dislike having to check on a coin constantly like a cancer patient. Why I dislike Potins, from experience.
$65 is too much, in my opinion. If you continue in the hobby, it has so many "problems" that I doubt you will never grow to like it.
Yeah, that coin has some serious BD problems but I was thinking that maybe I could save the coin. I've treated BD in 5 of my coins and it did not come back after having a coin for over a year for a couple of them, one was 2 years I think. I can post them later when I reshoot the coin. The cheapest retail for Romulus on VCoins I've seen is $600 in much higher grade. I have not seen any Romulus coins on Ebay right now. I advanced searched for both auctions and buy it now. So, given how expensive they are and how often they are available, it's not worth it? Just wondering since you guys mention it.
If you think you can treat it and not have the crap come back, and you will be happy with it, then get it. Were only stating what we think if it was us. Its your collection Trust me, we all have dogs in our collection that many of us wonder why we got in some form or another. Rarity & killer price is usually the main reason.
Believe me, I understand exactly what you mean. And it's ok, I'd rather you guys be honest and tell me straight up if there is an issue. I also posted it for that reason to get opinions. I'm leaning towards getting it more because it's a challenge for one, price and rarity is another factor. I like getting nice awesome problem free coins like all you guys do but yeah, but if I see a coin I can get for cheap compared to market prices I will think about getting it. Just like that Hannibalianus coin I got with a hole in it. I doubt I will ever afford $2-600 coins any day soon.
I don't mind cleaning a little bit of BD, but that one seems like a lot of work. If you have the patience for it then more power to ya...but I have to wonder whether it's going to stay cured.
I have many doubts as well but then I feel like it's calling out for me to try. The way the coin looks certainly isn't calling on me for sure but the challenge is.
I went to the site of CNG, http://cngcoins.com/Default.aspx clicked on "Research" and searched on "Romulus Maxentius" (to not get so many Romulus and Remus coins). It showed some excellent pieces under $400.
This one I would stay well away from. I, like you have treated BD on many coins, but this looks like its too far into the coin..... spend your money elsewhere...
i would also avoid that one GG....but i'm not particularly drawn by the type. i understand the pull of a coin you really want in a price range you can afford however.
That's funny, Steve. That's about it too. That BD is pretty bad. I talked to the dealer about it too and he confirmed that it is BD.
