I've been threatening to join up in the local club, but have not done so yet because of the time commitment. I have kids in school and sports and that usually trumps my week day evenings...but one of my unspoken resolutions this year is to get more connected with the local collectors and I think the club is the best means for that.

A second hesitation in doing so, is that I've heard that the the local club here where I live is more like a monthly auction with a lack of focus on Numismatics...I'll have to attend personally tho to make that judgment for my self.

I was just wondering how many folks here actually take the time tho to attend their local club meetings.

Been meaning to, but I always find myself out of town on the 2nd Wednesday for the month. I'll be around next week, so I'm going to make a point to go.

I go to my local monthly meeting which is usually just a auction but every other month they have guest speakers. And there are about 80 members there on average so tons of people to trade or buy from. Found out about more local shows and even got rides to shows or places I would of never went too. Some meetings are boring and some are extremely cool

I actually run my own monthly coin club. There aren't too many people who come but a couple, mostly younger kids.
We have a blast and its fun for me, encouraging me to go on with the club

    No.

I attend a "Daily" coin club meeting and it happens right here on this forum.

Actually, I attend 3 daily coin club meetings. Here, PCGS, and NGC.

The IKE Group has the potential for a daily meeting but its been closer to a weekly meeting than anything else.

I attend the Monthly meeting as well, and we have a nice well rounded agenda, although our membership is rather small at about 20 folks.

The only thing I can say if you are unhappy with your club and the direction its taking, is to become more involved yourself. Come up with ways that work towards your ideals and implement those. Coddle some of the guys to get a small following of folks who will work with you and back you on things.

I am going through a similar situation right now and it just takes hard work, dedication, and a drive to see things through until its as successful as you want it. (My problem right now is helping to build up our annual show)

I attend the Boston Numismatic society meeting regularly. I kind of have to, being the VP. We have a guest speaker almost every meeting.

To those who used the forum as their daily coin club meeting...I've kind of felt that way for a while...the only thing missing is actually personally face to face interaction...which I enjoy. Don't get me wrong, this place has helped me immensely with my learning curve, so I do give this forum the credit.

@treylxapi47 - I especially appreciate your input, it is what I've told myself regarding a local club and also the need for a good local coin shop...if you see a gap, fill it...only for me I've got so many gaps in my own personal life...so to speak. If I do join and attend regularly it would be my plan to have an affect on the group and direction...getting involved also helps me learn.

Not gonna lie either, I'd love to find a person with tons of experience who can maybe be a mentor to me.

I think the trick is just action on my part...

Thanks for responding so fare, I hope more reply.

This place is definitely a bastion of fellowship and learning, albeit a bit ruff and gruff at times, but for the most part its a good and entertaining place to frequent.

I know what you mean about having your own gaps to fill in life, and I have those same thoughts. I can just see where many of our club guys are burnt out a bit and I feel its my duty to inject new life and new blood back into things to keep it going. They built it up for me to enjoy, now its my turn to help build them up for their enjoyment and the enjoyment of future members.

We really have a good group for the area, but I see so many ways we can do things better and the only way to see it done is to do it yourself many times. So I have vowed to take charge after I got married, and now that we are in a New Year, we shall see how my implementation goes.

Good luck on your endeavor with your club!

I attend meetings at a local coin club monthly. We typically have someone speak and an auction. The speakers are, at least for every meeting I have been to in the last 4 years, members. However, given the diversity of most coin clubs you can learn something, or at least a different perspective, at each meeting. The auction is also rewarding IMO. You never know what you will find and often times I find myself buying something I normally wouldn't just because it is such a deal.

In short to me - should someone attend coin club meetings? Absolutely! While you may not get something huge from every meeting, the sum of the whole is well worth the couple of hours you spend a month. And, since most of us do not have someone standing by waiting to talk about our addiction (except the spouse who thinks we are nuts for, and wants us to stop, spending 3, 4, 5 figures on a half of a penny), it's nice to see a few people every now and again with the same passions we have. Think of it as Coin Collectors Anonymous (except for the whole admitting you have a problem bit).

I attend four local coin club meetings each month (Local is a bit of a stretch, the closest s 40 miles away, the farthest 70 miles) The smallest has about 20 members the largest has 160. Two of them have auctions, one small the other from 150 to 250 items each month. Only one has an educational program each month. That one stresses numismatics more than the others and that club has produced at least three members who have written books a couple of major specialized collections and also three presidents of the ANA. The big auction club on the other hand had the chance to host one of the Central States Numismatic Society Seminars (All we had to do was be the host, no cost or expense to the club, the CSNS paid for everything) and they turned it down with the explanation "We're an auction club, not an educational club." (Pretty bad in my opinion for what is the largest club in the state.)

I'll have to echo something treylxapi said, I have heard a lot of people complain that they just didn't get anything out of their local club, if you want you club to be or do something different don't just sit there! Become an officer and start working to move the club in the direction you think it needs to go!. Believe me clubs are always looking for someone to step forward and start helping out. Most clubs wind up becoming stuck in a rut because they have the same officers year after year. Trying to get someone else to volunteer to be a officer is like pulling teeth. Everyone want to sit their and let someone else do it, and then complain about the way it is being done. So get in there and help. As the saying goes, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

The Croton River club which I am a member of, cancelled at the last minute last month, angering a few members who did not hear of the cancellation in time. Auction lots were recycled to this month, second Wednesday.
