Hello. New person here. thank you for helping. I'm putting a quarter album together and there are P and d and s. My question is the silver one pre 64 there is proof coins are these the same as the p that my dansco album is asking for or did Philly make both coins the proof and mint state
Hope this helps along the way, go to Chapter 4, Date by Date... http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index.php/reference-books/the-complete-guide-to-washington-quarters/
Yes indeed, Philadelphia made both! The "P" mint marked example would be referencing the standard Business Strike or MS coin which would have been put into circulation all those years ago. Proof coins are struck with specially prepared dies and have been sold to collectors, they were never meant to be placed in circulation. The surface of a Business Strike coin will have lots of frosty luster, while a Proof will shine like a mirror and sometimes have a cameo contrast which is highly prized with pre-1964 dates. Here is a quick example of a proof and an MS (business strike):
What grade is your set in? Washington's are just one set I've been playing with. I have all the keys in ms 64. Let me tell you if you have been playing with them for awhile you know those can kill ya. It took me 27 32 D's to get the one that fits. Lol but the good thing is the others shouldn't drop in price much so I shouldn't loose my investment. Congratulations. And good luck. And I'm new also but welcome.
When new sets come out I always buy 3 (for myself of each) I break one out for my books and the one goes into my sets and one goes into my junk drawer (if you will) but that is pretty much the extent of my new coins. I don't self grade them and actually when they go into hiding (books and sets and drawer) that is generally the last time I look at them (unless I'm showing to someone). I generally stick with coins and paper that are from the 30's and older. I have 3 complete sets of franklins and I have been playing with my Washingtons but other then that most of the others I already have. So my Washingtons are the last new set I am working on. And I don't collect (but have) quarters once they get newer then 64.
