The later two look just like the British Caribbean Territories 25 cent coin you sent me. The design is almost exact except for the depiction on the reverse. Very Interesting  .

    Thanks For sharing

On the obverse of both of those shillings there is something on the rim like a bump? (One at 3 o'clock and one at 4 o'clock) Any ideas what that is from?

I notice other minor differences like font size, date instead of denomination on the reverse flanking the image, the two six sided stars on the reverse.

Nice coins regardless but I think I like the BCT coin better, but then again it does have a ship on it :) .

Not sure to be honest some sort of imperfection in the die I would imagine.

I see that Nigeria declared independance in 1960. One of your coins is from 1961. How much longer after 1960 did they use the Queens image. If I was at home I would look it up in my catalog.

    Thanks

Steve, there was a 1/- in 1962.Between 1912 & 1959,Nigeria was using British West African coins.Between 1906 & 1911,it was the coins of Nigeria - British West Africa that were being issued. In fact the Nigerian 1/2d. & 1d. design is very similar to the British West African coin designs. There are 2 types of the 2/-,& they're both hard to find. They're coins that still elude me.

Although Nigeria became a British Commonwealth republic in 1963,the Queen's coinage was left in circulation until 1973,when Nigeria became the last British Commonwealth member state the change over to a decimal currency - 100 Kobo = 1 Naira. The plural of Naira is Naira.

Thanks Aidan, I knew that they were the last to let go of the £sd but did not realise that EII was on the coins for so long :thumb:

Steve, there were no pre-decimal coins issued under the Republic of Nigeria, but the old coins were kept in circulation. The only pre-decimal numismatic items that were issued under the Republic of Nigeria were banknotes & postal orders.
