I'm still working through my December backlog, so my first coin post of 2015 showcases 2014 carryovers. With any luck, my wallet will get a break for awhile and I won't be posting my first pickups of 2015 any time soon . These three are from my mixed lot of provincials, all from Alexandria Troas. The first two have looks that appeal to me, and were types already on my want list. The third is in rougher shape, but considerably rarer and took abit of searching before I could find it referenced. I'm pretty sure I'll be adding more issues from this city in the future. I know a few of you have some great coins from Alexandria Troas, so please pile on! VALERIAN AE21 5.62g, 21mm TROAS, Alexandria Troas, 253 - 260 AD SNG Cop 191 var (obv legend). O: IMP LICI VALERIAN, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: COL AVG TRO, horse grazing right. TROAS, Alexandria Troas Pseudo-autonomous Issue Circa 2nd-3rd centuries AD AE22 5.76g, 22mm Bellinger A495 O: AV-GO TRO, draped and turreted bust of Tyche right; vexillum behind. R: COL AVG, TRO in exergue, wolf suckling the twins, Romulus and Remus. COMMODUS AE16 2.71g, 16mm TROAS, Alexandria Troas, circa 184-192 AD RPC online Vol. 4, Temp No 9192 (1 example cited, Münzkabinett of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin). O: CAI(sic) COMM AV, bare-headed bust of Commodus wearing cuirass and paludamentum, right. R: COL AV, horse grazing right, TROA in ex.
Nice coins! I'm also a fan of the grazing horse of Alexandreia. I'm not sure I would call mine great, but it's certainly respectable, and it came at the right price... Valerian I of Alexandreia Troas AE20; Alexandreia Troas Obv.: IMP LIC VALERIANVS AV; laureate, draped, cuirassed bust r. Rev.: COL AVG; grazing horse r. // TROA Reference: SNG von Aulock 7573 var (ending of both legends)
Awesome new additions, Z-Bro => very yummy!! I also have a few Troas Tyche-examples to toss into your thread ... Cheers, my coin-friend
Ummmm, and I also have these four Troas examples which don't exactly look the same as the coins shown so far ... but I figured, "eh, they're still coins from Troas, right?" Thanks for the coinpliments, guys. Love all the coins that have been added on. Here's one more, my first from Alexandria Troas and still one of my favorite coins. SEVERUS ALEXANDER AE24 6.97g, 24.6mm TROAS, Alexandria Troas, 222-235 AD Bellinger 341cf (Bellinger obv A341 & rev A338), possibly unrecorded O: IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust left, holding spear & shield decorated with head of Medusa. i don't have any from troas...i thought i did . must be still delirious somewhat from spending the last two days on the couch trying to to vomit or poo before i got to the bathroom. nice new one, i especially like the valerian. he is high on my to get list.
Did you see the one on today's Pecunem sale? EUR 325 on 50 estimate (which was a joke!). The writing on the banner behind the obverse head was legible.
No ... somehow I've lost track of what is goin' on in this thread!! (some people get a bit too rowdy every now and then!! ... geeshh!!) Ummm, do you happen to have a link or a photo?
https://www.pecunem.com/auction-27/lot-418 I guess it is OK to post after closing. I would not want to draw attention to a lot before fearing you were hoping to get it for EUR 50. I was underbidder (leading loser) on three lots in this sale. I wonder if any of you won them.
