I found this going thru rolls bought from gas station, everyone else has said it's an acid washed penny, took it to a jeweller who said it is gold and got it weighed 2.4 grams \ 1.5 penny weight\ 18mm Dia., took it back and had him clean it, on the Obverse below the date you can see a impression of what looks like a part of a wreath, can anyone identify this? It kind of resembles the wreath's i have seen on older gold dollars.

It sort of looks like it to me, but, i'm just basing that on the pictures, although, I wouldn't think that something like that could have slipped up and not been found for so many years, if it is in fact gold... Gold plating may be is what is going on, but, I don't see why that would really be done to a penny....It looks pretty eat up, where the dings are that are going into the coin, does it still show the golden color to it?

Well, as gold has not been minted by the US in quite some time, I would find it difficult to believe that the coin is gold. Now I am not sure when the mint stopped minting foriegn coins, so this could be a planchet destined for another country. Gold plating of coins is common for all denominations for use in jewelry. Cleaning was certainly not a good idea regardless. If in fact this coin was some form of wrong planchet, your cleaning will significantly effect the value.

When i found it in the roll of pennies it had really green sticky cents on either side, like they had soda on them. The Jeweller used a ultrasonic cleaner and rinsed and dried with a silver cloth to dry, at least it helped me to find some detail i couldn't see before, the darkness you see in places is due to the scan. it still is bright and gold and no it isn't electroplated. But has to be a intentional error. If anyone is good with Photoshop save the images and blow them up larger. I tried changing the pic to Night Vision and it showed a outline of what looked like a Liberty Head design?

Could it be a experimental type of planchet? Or coating of somesort that the mint used to experiment with??? That's all that I can think of, I don't know how logical it is, just trying to throw some suggestions out there...

Here is a larger view. I still think that this is plated.

It's plated - if it were a gold planchet - it would be heavier than 2.5 gm.

Plated with something, and a clashed die? maybe giving the appearance of what looks like a liberty head, which is really lincolns?
