Is this of nickel worth collecting? Also I have seen this on some coins where the letters go into the rim. Could someone tell me why this happens please and if it something I should be collecting? Thanks so much.
In this case it's the rim going into the letters, just worn down. Good for an album filler till you get a better one.
I would certainly keep it like said above it is 80 years old, and if you ever really need a nickel yoou will have one.
The rim and letters are merging due to wear. It is old but not worth much more than a nickel. However, I am a collector and I keep every nickel dated 1963 and below just because I can. You just don’t find them very often in circulation.
You know if your a collector sure have one for the album. More than one sitting around, I'd prefer some other coin...if that makes sense.
It makes sense. However with as many grandkids as I have I do keep a surplus. I just put together some Jefferson nickels for a grandson. From my surplus I found all but a few from 1938 to 1964.
There are always reasons to sit on older coins. I Used to pull old nickles from slot machines when you could still get a payout in coin and not paper. After sitting on them for 20 plus years I put them back in circulation at a time when they had one of those great American Coin hunts running.
I have been keeping any nickel 1959 or older for a couple decades now, expecting my children might start collecting one day. Sure enough...they both started this year, and got a heck of a jump start on one of the most fun to collect denominations!
The great thing about nickels is that you can still find all of them in change. I got a 1900 in a roll from the bank. I would recommend Jefferson nickels to anyone starting to collect. They are all still out there.
Agreed! This was still one of the most exciting and enjoyable collections to complete. I did it on a teenager's budget, and still ended up with spending money for other things.
That was a good year, born then as well. Looking back, missed the fifties and sixties before I knew what was going on. Mid Seventies just started to make a few cents and then the eighties when I finally got $1000 is when the bank interest rate headed towards 0.
