I got this 1884-O Morgan for the lofty price of $1. That's right, face value. What was the best deal you've ever gotten?
I was once in the line ordering food at Mc Donald's when the lady in front of me handed the cashier to half dollars. I then gave the cashier $1 for the two of them and one was from 1967 and the other 1969 which makes them 40%. Not quite as impressive as your deal but still in my opinion a nice deal.
I use to mow lawns as a kid then take my silver certs to the bank and exchange them for silver dollars. I always saved the best looking Morgans and spent the others.
1861 Gold dollar from a relative that passed away. I'm sure I'm not the only one here that received coins that way.
I've had a few great deals, these are the best: $100 for a $900 Buffalo Nickel Type 1. $50 for a $1200 Accent Hair Kennedy. Both coins were held for awhile, and sold. I don't want ~$1000 coins. I used money to buy $250 coins.
An 1808 Bust Half that I got for $20. It was thrown into a dealers discount bucket on accident but he was nice enough to let me have it for that price because I was a young collector.
That is basically how I got my start in this hobby. 1908 D Indian Half Eagle $5. My favorite coin in my collection at the moment. Paid $100 for it in 2012 from my grandmother who received it from a passed away relative. I told her it was worth way more but she didn't even want to accept any money let alone the $100. Just said jokingly, if she needed money she knew who to ask.
I once bought 2 BUY IT NOW coins from the same seller at astonishingly good prices. He was likely lowballed by the LCS, listed them on eBay for more money, and I happened to see them come up when I was checking new listings in 2009. One was a 1907 Quarter Eagle for $299 which ultimately graded MS65, and I sold for around $1700. The other was an 1852-C Half Eagle for $1999 which I graded MS62 with PCGS, and thought was a point better. That coin was stolen in a burglary, so I never got to realize the potential profit from that one.
When I was a much younger collector, about 40 years ago, a little boy came into my father's bakery to buy 12 cupcakes. In those days, (c. 1970's) the price for a dozen cupcakes was 96 cents. It was not often that my father waited on a customer himself, but in this case, the little boy was very happy to buy his box of freshly-iced chocolate cupcakes. He paid my father with an 1878 Morgan Dollar. I still own this coin today. The cost? Nothing, as a gift when my Dad came home.
I've gotten silver dimes quarters and halfs for face. I got 2 nice bust halfs a 1832 that went vf-35 and an xf 40 1836 for $100 from a guy who bought them at a yard sale for $10. He asked me if I was interested I said how much said hundred bucks and I pulled out the cash
I picked up a 1900 British Honduras .50 cent, mintage of 10,000 for melt, $10. Worth about $400 Bryan So-Called dollar for melt , about $50. Worth about $500. British 1887 proof double florin for $38, worth about $500. 1990 China 1oz silver vault protector for $22, worth about $500 Those are the highlights that come to mind.
When I first started collecting, you could buy Morgan's all day long for $6... I ended up with a few nice ones.... If only I knew then what I know now...
