You have gotten some good tips and such here---and I agree with almost everything-
I would NOT go by the price guide at PCGS---they are over hyped and many times the coins aren't worth what their guide says.
You need to sit down and get a Red Book and go coin by coin and make a list--then check the Red Book (The prices in it are almost as bad as PCGS) and check to see what ones look like they might be more $$$...the Red Book's value might be alittle better...
OR post the list here and we can point out what ones might be worth sending off--I would send them to NGC that way you don't have to find a PCGS dealer.

I would also point out that I wouldn't hold the coins by cloth--I'm going to get black-balled here but I would suggest bare fingers....that is all I use and I don't know of any dealer that uses gloves...they don't give you the grip and the cloth may put hairlines on the coins that is hard to see but lowers the value tons.
HOLD the coin by the edges (RIM) and put that cloth under where you are holding it so if you do drop it it doesn't hit a hard floor.

If you have any questions just post here!

How would you hold a coin with rim lettering???

Carefuly :D That is trickly and most of the ones I've held have been in slabs---if I had the chance to put them in a clear flip then I more than likely would do that...otherwise I would hold it the best I could.

I've never even held one, or seen one upclose for that matter....

I want one or two, just to look at and to know I gott'em...

They are really cool coins as while I don't own one I love to look at them.
When you do get one---lets says its a Half Dollar--if you are going to put it in a flip get a Dollar size flip--that way you can see the edge!

Yes the helpful sharks are circling LOL.

PS I agree with one of the early posters though, it looks like a fingerprint on the obverse of the Trail coin.

    Hey all,

My thread is still here! Anyway - as mentioned just above - the January thread on the C.U. forum was a bit crazy - and honestly, because of that I know I sorta drop-kicked you guys over here. I could not keep-up with that one thread, let along two! (Sorry...)

I don't know if I'm breaking some sort of etiquette here, but I have recently posted a follow-up thread on the C.U. board - and will keep posting pics and updates there (depending if interest holds.)

    Thanks..

IMHO I would NOT get them graded, unless you like throwing money away! Contrary to popular belief, a graded coin is not worth any more then an ungraded coin. An MS65 coin is an MS65 coin whether it is slabbed or not. And any legitimate collector should be able to see the quality and pay you a fair price. If you have a $750 coin, why pay $100 to a 3rd party to tell you it's worth $750???

Also, all the previous advice about handling the coins is correct. Keep them with all the original packaging in a cool dry place. Ziplock sandwich bags work great for this!

Save your money, do not get them graded.

    Darth5oh,

I have been following your thread over on the CU boards. I am glad that you took your time to straighten your thoughts out, as I know you were having a lot of thoughts and opinions thrown your way. It is definitely exciting to see a whole collection of such fresh material to enter the hobby. That first Spanish Trail you show was absolutely stunning.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do with your collection.

I recommend you send them off to get slabbed (I recommend NGC)
For one thing it will protect them form handling mistakes, also it will give you a measure of security when you go to sell them. The coin may in fact be an MS65, but if its raw i doubt you will find a dealer that will pay you more than MS60-64 prices for it.

Do not be worried about sending them registered mail, I have sent off thousands of dollars worth of coins and have never had any problems, the hope diamond was sent via registered mail!

congrats on the great collection, hopefully my grandkids will be as respectful of my collection when i pass ;)

    Howdy and congrats,

The others have offered great advice.

Buy yourself a Red Book Guide to Collecting US Coins so you can approximate the values.

As mentioned, the real stars should probably be slabbed IFF you intend to sell them.

Keep them all in their original holders as with anything, this increases their value.

Treat them gently and TAKE YOUR TIME, your grandfather took his time in collecting them.

And in all honesty, nothing would please your grandfather more than having you develop an interest in collecting. Sure, you may want to sell some of the rarer, but might find you really like collecting some of the others.

    But again, TAKE YOUR TIME,

    peace,

    rono
