One more mystery coin has arised from the huge silver coin lot, that I'm searching through. This coin has arabic inscription on it, but I think was able to identify the coin to be from Kingdom of Iran and it is minted in 1899. But that's about all that I can identify, since I cannot find this coin/medal from regular Krause coin catalog.

Thus I'd once again need you guys helping me out to positively identify this coin or medal...and of course, some catalog value would also be appreciated.

Here is a link to a photograph of the coin:

    JJ,that is definitely a medal.Unfortunately,I can only read the date - AH1317 (1899) & nothing else.

Aidan, I too believed that this would most likely be a medal. However, it has several same features as the coins of same era (the lion side for example, is similar to 2000/5000 dinar coins, minus the fact that this medal is missing the crown foind on coins).

I also concluded that the date is muslim era 1317 and the inscription on the date-side centre, is states that the ruler is Muzaffar al-Din Shah...this would indicate that the mint year is 1899.

But that's all I could identify. I hoped that someone had the Krause book on medallic issues and check if this was listed in that book, since I could not find this in regular Krause 1801-1900 book.

The design looks to me to be identical to KM A914 5 Krans / 5000 dinars. The only thing being that the date given for that issue is AH1293, and one year only.

Weigh the coin, and if it weighs in at 23.0251 gms, then i'd be inclined to believe that it is an issue that Krause has missed.

I noticed the similarity too, but I also noticed that they are not exactly similar: KM A914 hasn't got the inscription going around the date and the name of the ruler, as does my coin have.

But I'll try to get the weight of the coin ASAP.

I measured and weighed the coin, results:

    Diameter: 37.5mm
    Weight: 14.5g (approximately)

Certainly not a clone of the 5,000 Dinar listed by Krause.

Where are all the guys who read Arabic???

That's pretty light for a coin/token that big. The old US silver dollar was just over 38 mm and weighed 22.4 grams.?.

The top of the item gives it away as being a medal,as there is still a trace of the soldering, plus the mount mark at the top along the edge.

It is definitely not a 5,000 Dinars (5 Krans) coin I'm afraid.

Mystery solved; one finnish coin enthusiast found it. This item is indeed a medal, listed in a book 'Unusual World Coins', here is a quote:
