Please can you help with the diety on the reverse of this coin and also a reference number Thank you for your expertise. The coin is Philip from Kallatis
It looks like Hera to me. The only reference I have for Provincials of Kallatis is Varbanov, and he does not record this type. This representation does occur on earlier coins of Elagabalus - from Kallatis, that is.
I'm away from home, so the only references I have are on-line and I have not been able to find a compatible reference yet.
I would add that the E in the right field of the reverse indicates the denomination - a pentassarion.
Thank you so much for looking at my post I don't want this coin to end up without a proper attribution. I have had it looked at as just couldn't decide whether it was Hera or Demeter and it is the torch in her left hand that is pointing more towards Demeter. It is close and may need some more research but Pick worked with a coin that he described as Demeter with corn ears but this was questionable as it wasn't clear on the example he had privy to. I have a better photo of another example I have found and think it should be classed as Demeter with patera and torch and I wonder whether it will be a variation of Pick's 350 or whether it will have a new reference. Whatever happens I am thrilled to have it in my collection I feel honoured. I add here another better grade example for you to check out. Any comments will be welcome thank you again
I'm not aware of Pick - what is the title of the reference? I looked through Moushmov online and found coin 338, which has Hera standing left, holding patera and scepter. M 338, however, is not a pentassarion. This is as close as I could get. Here it is, plate 12, coin 21...
Thank you John for the picture I have seen this one but I was unable to copy it so you have done well. The legend is incorrect but is the nearest I have seen so far with the diety. I will copy and paste what Jochen has to say he is a great help at these provincial coins and he says...... Pick (AMNG I/1, 350) writes "Demeter (?) stg. l., holding ears in r. hand and resting with l. hand on scepter". And in a note below: "The ears are not sure on the specimen from Berlin; the woman can hold at best a patera in her r. hand or a torch in her l. hand, hardly both" But we can see that Pick here was not right. If we want to give a name to the woman, we have to decide between Hera and Demeter. And a Demeter with a patera is rather possible than a Hera with a torch. So decisions have to be made and a this coin may get its own reference after all LETS HOPE
Thank you John Anthony it does give you an extra warm feeling I am adding a link to Picks book hopefully you can get to Kallatis using the arrows Kallatis starts on page 83, If the pages go blank you have to go back and let the writing catch up ENJOY.... https://archive.org/details/p1dieantikenmn01akaduoft
