You know as well as I do that flame throwing DOES occur on the PCGS BST forum and those threads are usually removed along with the bamming of the most obnoxious flame throwers. It has happened more than once and was the entire basis behind my original reply.
@cpm9ball - Chris, have you ever seen a coin that you personally were reasonably certain was a fake, and told others it was a fake, only to find out later that you were wrong ? I have. Have you ever seen a coin that NGC and PCGS both said was genuine and slabbed/graded it - that you could positively prove it was a counterfeit ? I have. The point is, when even the TPGs can be wrong, so can anybody else. Or how would you feel if you posted a coin for sale and I, or any other member, came along and said publicly on the forum that it was a fake ? What would your reaction be ? Now I don't know about you, but if I posted a coin for sale and you came along and said it was a fake I sure wouldn't like it. Rather doubt you would either. But that's the situation we get into by doing so. So what do ya do ? Not much you can do really except go with your gut and say what you have to say. Just like you did in this thread. But that's about all you can do. And there are a multitude of reasons as to why that is ALL anyone can do.
Doug, if you go back and reread my posts, you will notice that I said nothing about counterfeit coins. That is a subject that was mentioned by someone else, not me! Chris
OK, but the reason doesn't really matter, the issue is still the same. It can be because somebody says the coins are counterfeit, that they are over-graded, or that they are over-priced, or for whatever reason. Your suggestion was that we have some special place to "out" these people, to make others aware. What I was pointing out with my comments are the problems with "outing" people, the problems associated with making others aware by outing them. Your suggestion is not a new one Chris, over the years many others have suggested the very same thing. The subject usually comes up a couple of times a year even. But what happens if and when CT creates a special place for outing people ? What are the legal liabilities, not only for CT, but for you yourself if you make a post in that special place ? Do you know what it costs you personally if someone decides to sue you ? And their suit doesn't even have to be a valid suit, they might not even have the proverbial snowball's chance of winning, but the mere fact they filed the suit is going to cost you, or CT, or both big time. And that's just one of the several problems that such a thing can cause. Chris I don't think there's anybody that dislikes people taking advantage of others any more than I dislike it. But it is going to happen, no matter what you do, no matter what I do, no matter what CT does, it is going to happen. Would I like to stop it ? Sure, I'd do it in a New York second if I could, but I can't. About all I can do, and in my opinion the best thing I can do, is to try and teach people and show them the best ways to avoid these things from happening to them. And that's what I do day after day, week after week, and year after year. You do it too, so do many others on this forum. We share the knowledge we have gained over the years with others. And that's a good thing. It is also a good thing that you pointed out that auction. But that's about as much as any of us can do buddy ! No matter what we do, we simply can't protect people from themselves. Heck most of the time even when we try they ignore us.
Hey! If I wanna put my IKE Dollar up for $15,000.............that's my business. Having someone come along and, out of the goodness of their heart, state that it's only worth $1.50 would not be appreciated. Its not your call to make in the respective thread and its that simple.
It'll never happen here on CT. I don't think it's needed either b/c all it's gonna do is start a bunch of crap and we don't need it. We already have a ton of members who don't like each other and are just waiting to throw a flame war on someone.
A "report" button for grossly inaccurate descriptions and counterfeits is enough. Anything more is asking for misuse and abuse from other bidders, or sellers with similar products. Ebay has dealt with this in the past in a responsible manner.
