Just thought this was intersting... Going through some Sac's at work and came across this unusual one. Never seen one so worn. The only explanation I have is it was a picket piece. I posted a pic of it next to a regular one with the same date. Anyone seen one like this?
Nope, never seen one that worn. I'm not overly fond of the Sacajawea dollars anyway, especially the choice they made with the metal. I'd say pocket piece is a good bet, I don't think these circulate anywhere outside of vending machines.
I work at a bank and I go to all the change that comes through there. When I get bored I look through the dollar coins just for fun. You never know what you will find. I will look for missing edge lettering dollars.
The likely answer to why Agilmore's coin is so worn is that it probably circulated in either El Salvador or Ecuador, two countries that exclusively use coins and currency of the United States. I went to El Salvador in November and saw dollar coins that looked just like what has been pictured. I was initially surprised to see dollar coins (including newer Presidential dollars) in such well-circulated condition as I wasn't used to seeing them like that before Dollar coins are preferred over dollar bills in these countries and actually circulate instead of sitting in storage vaults for years on end unlike in the United States. These are probably where most of the worn dollar coins you've seen have been as well.
I have a Sac that I carried from Feb 2000 till Feb 2010 and I put it in a 2x2 then sealed it. Don't ask me why I just did it LOL
I can remember from my trip to New York (2008 maybe?), that the dollar coins were used in metro. And pretty much all coins I saw were in circulated condition.
