I'm wondering if those dark areas at the bottom and part of the upper left side are lamination errors. Or, what could it be? Thanks in advance.
No, I'm not sure that there is any error that involves weird color. It is just uneven toning. It is still a nice proof though. Lamination is different, it looks like some of the metal is peeled away.
Oh I see, sort of like a layer is cracked or peeled away, thanks! On the Kennedy, the dark area is matte, whereas the rest of the half dollar is shiny with the right side having a rainbow tone.
Proof coin Looks like it has seen circulation with the scratches and toning I agree the color is just environmental Since it appears as it does...I would throw it in a Acetone soak and see if gets a little prettier. Is there a story behind how you found it?
Nice find of a proof coin while roll hunting...but yes, it has seen better days as proof coins do not do well being handled by the masses. If you like it, keep it. If you want to see if it will pretty up, try some cleaning (acetone soaks). Coin has lost its numismatic value, so now it is about your likes and dislikes. I have several environmentally damaged coins (heat, smoke, artifical toning, etc) because I think they are neat.
