Over and over again, we are informed of sellers posting coins with ridiculous prices on FleaBay. I've also noted similar listings in our own B/S/T. The problem with all such listings in our forums is that we cannot respond directly in the thread. We must send the OP a private message. What good does it do when we can't make other members aware that "asking" or "opening bid" prices are ridiculous? One such listing appeared today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-P-Wash...ie-chips-on-reverse-/111559550899?&rmvSB=true Since we aren't allowed to comment directly to these forum threads, maybe it is time that we have a special forum to warn everyone? Yeah, I know there will be the naysayers who will pass the buck and blame the uninformed buyers for their lack of knowledge, but isn't one of the purposes of these forums to help educate the uninformed? Chris
Unfortunately, I am afraid that allowing replies on the BST or a separate "comment" forum would lead to flame wars, retribution, and a whole lot of negative energy. I think that if people have questions about items for sale they can message other members here for opinions. There is some inherent risk in buying coins and anyone who chooses to spend money without doing his/her homework is going to have some uncomfortable surprises.
IMHO, there is nothing unethical about asking too much for any item. If it is counterfeit or grossly misrepresented, then there is a problem that a comment board might benefit the potential customers.
If someone gets irritated by criticism and goes off the deep end, then maybe they don't deserve to be here. Chris
one vote in favor of a comment board (perhaps as a trial run). If it get too nasty, then it could be pulled.
What one person thinks their coin is worth and what another is willing to pay for it is none of my business. Fraud is a different matter, but there is nothing unethical about ask/bid prices no matter what they are.
I've seen some of the "criticism" that folks offer on BST Forums and many times, it has nothing to do with the coin for sale. I've also seen many "counterfeit" threads that weren't actually counterfeits. I've also seen forum members reply to BST threads for no reason other than to pop it back to the top of the page. While I'd appreciate being able to update my own BST thread, I would not appreciate allowing the public to offer their "opinions" on what I have for sale. If they don't like it, then they can just move along.
Right Lee..........nothing good would ever come out of allowing commentary in the BTS section. It's a house fire waiting to get started.
The problem as I see it is unjust criticism, baiting, inaccurate statements, and just plain meanness that would inevitably occur if commentary on the BST is allowed. Not to mention the extra policing the moderators would have to do. IMO it would do more harm than good.
There is another thread about this, wanting the forum to control what was in the B/S/T threads and the administrative view is at the moment , no. Doug's point about the site not being responsible for making the decision to keep or remove listings members have deemed fakes, etc, leaves the alternatives to remove such subforums, or as he suggested , if you think something is off, post as we do with eBay auctions that seem off. A new forum is not needed, just start your post with a title such as 'Questionable in my opinion' and state your case !Nicely!, as it would not be good for problems that I foresee could readily occur, especially considering many photos could be deliberately fuzzy or not, or photo-shopped. We have had many threads that posters indicate are probably a problem without any members flame war, but some get carried away in their defense of their position on both sides. If a posters reputation and a nice warning of a possibility doesn't convince a buyer to lay off, give up trying to convince everyone, he/she has been warned and if they buy or not is their business. No insults, bullying, etc. and it could work.
When I asked about it in a thread not long ago, Peter said he would consider adding the option to the OP to allow replies in BST. I am totally for it, as I was asking so ' silent auctions ' could take place. Bids in the form of replies are way better than having to open messages.
The only negative aspect of this website I have encountered in my time on here is when people pull out their flamethrowers and go to work on each other. There's enough of that going on "out there", so we sure don't need to bring it "in here". No reason to give folks another reason to flame.
I'll just say - both NGC and PCGS allow replies on their BST forums, and I haven't seen any problems there. It allows people to ask questions and other people can see the responses. And if there was going to be flamethrowing, I guarantee you would have seen it on the PCGS forums.
