The obverse I would give a 62 IMO. Doesn't seem to have a nice strike. Kind of hard to see one of the star. But, the reverse is very nice. Awesome strike, not many dings or scuff marks. I would give that a 64. The thing that keeps it from getting a 65 in my opinion would be the scratch on the eagles chest. So it might make a 63 because of the rev. Very nice coin btw.

The coin shows more than just a little wear on both obverse and reverse - AU50.

I understand your question about weak strike and the reasoning. But there is a way to tell weak strike from wear. On the obverse, look at the hair around the ear and the area I have circled. See how the earlobe and the hair directly above it is a different color than the central portion of the ear and the hair near the top of the red ine. That is because of wear. With minor wear the luster is worn off and that is what cause those areas to be a different color than the adjoining areas. The same is true with the bun, the cheek, the neck and the fields under the chin. The luster is worn off. The same applies to areas on the reverse I have circled.

Yes it is true that the hair above the ear will often be flat if the coin is weakly struck. But with weakly struck coins that hair above the ear, while flat, will be the very same color as the rest of the hair and it will have luster. When it does not have luster and is flat and a different color, the cause is wear - not a weak strike.

That's the reason for my opinion.

edit - sorry, forgot to attach the pics

ok , I see what your geting at.. another words im pickin up what your throwing down..LOL.. i only paid 20.00 for it but was a test from a seller on ebay.. has some good dates but all grade by numismatic national coin??>...
something like that.. i figure a cut of at least 3 or 4 grades lower.. it does have qualities of unc. but now that i see the simalarities of the wear.. this gradeing is so crazy... why in the world would any 3rd prty grade 4 grades high??

just as a comparison .. to this coin.. which was graded 65 in pic. i see that the luster is uniformed as compared to the 1890..

gradeing is a very tuff thing to learn.. so many variables.. wear, digs, rims, mint, strke... on and on..i have learned astronomy and found all the messeir objects.. but coins are tough to get right...

anyways thanks again to the opinions...

Very nice. Yeah, it is one of the hardest arts to learn. But when you see enough coins and get the hang of it, it get's a little easier. I'm seeing where GD has pointed out, and I'm now inclined to agree. I missed that. I still have alot of learning to do my self! That is a very beautiful Morgan you have posted.

NNC is not a third party grader that shoulld be trusted, they are notorious for over-grading - vasty over-grading. As to why they do it - they do it because uninformed collectors will buy coins in their slabs thinking they are getting the deal of the century. In reality, they are throwing money away.

Regardless of the grade this is a very nice coin with good eye appeal in my book. Of course I do wear glasses.

$20.00 seems quite fare, great buy actually.

Yeah, I was fooled there until GD pointed the spots out. It was a good deal for a Morgan in my mind. But I would think GD has it about on the nose. All I can say now is, keep studying and collecting. It takes a long time to really understand the art of grading. Let the force be with you. :D:D:D
