Hello, I currently keep the majority of my collection in 2x2's in a binder. Although very utilitarian... it leaves something to be desired aesthetically. I like the presentation of Dansco's #7070 & Intercept Shield's type set collection albums. Unfortunately I've ran into a snag. The 7070 is out if print & I'd much rather spend the inflated retail price of $80 on a sweet coin. On the other hand Intercept Shield offers a $30 alternative, but also has a production design flaw with holes to small for the braided hair large cent & 20 cent coins. I suppose I could always get a blank Dansco & add the 7070 pages separately. Are there other Type Set album options I'm over looking?
I wonder what the deal is with Dansco. The 7070 was such a bit hit with collectors. You would think they could do really well with a new version. It may take two albums to cover it. Maybe that's the problem.
Supposedly the album is only "temporarily unavailable" due to an update process. Sounds nice...but I'm not holding my breath.
If you can find one cheap, the 7070 is great. It does however have a few short comings, mainly not being updated. The other thing I think the 7070 could use is include holes for different finishes like SMS, satin, proof, EU, reverse proof ect. If these interest you, you may want to piece together your own album. I have a 20th century Whitman which includes holes for business strikes and proofs.
The Dansco 7070 is great as are the Library of Coins and Whitman Classic albums. However, both the Library of Coins and Whitman Classic options have been out of print or quite a while, too. Additionally, the Whitman Classic is a double-album with slots for many tougher types.
I use the Intercept album. It was easy to fix the undersize hole for the braided hair large cent and the 20 cent piece. I used a dremil tool with a sanding cylinder. very little material needs to be removed and it did not damage the album page. I like the Intercept because it is updated and inexpensive compared to the Dansco, and the coins look nice against the green background.
I have never seen an album that satisfactorily encompasses all candidates for a type set. BUT That's because of my definition of a type set. As I always say the contents of a type set is up to the collector. Look at the Red Book and decide for yourself. If a 7070 does it for you, great. Otherwise your type set may end up in 2x2's, or flips, or Airtites. Then you'll have to find an album to accommodate them.
