My sister was never introduced into coin collecting. And being the only one who collecting in the family gets boring. She's only 11 so I though I could introduce her early. Since I hoard change, I rolled up 120 assorted Washington quarters, mainly state, and state park (all of my quarters). I was wondering if it was a good idea to get her started with those? I pretty much gave her $30 face value of quarters. But in a collectors eyes, priceless. I hope she will be glad of her Christmas present. Any thoughts on my actions, was it a good idea, should I have gave her something else?
I think coins that someone has never seen before, such as world coins, or a Buffalo nickel, or even an ASE has a better chance of getting someone interested in coin collecting rather than coins they see every day. However, until and unless there's a spark it probably doesn't matter what you give them. Good luck though with your idea.
I will include a mercury dime and a few kennedys in after she opens it. Definatly not one of my beloved peace or morgan dollars.
I only own 2. Not very interested in them but, it's a coal colored one from tarnish but it'll still get her interests. Still has very sharp details and almost FB
Women are not programmed to collect coins. Men are genetically programmed to hunt and gather, as modern adults they sublimate this hindbrain urge by gathering and hoarding stuff, regardless of utility. Thus they may collect anything from coins to railroad spikes. Women are programmed to nurture. They may collect dolls or similar nurturing surrogates, or as nest building material, as in decorative trinkets to make their nests more inviting to mates or to enhance their mating prospects. OP, I fear your laudable ambition is doomed.
you have obviously not been to a Las Vegas coin show. not only do they have women dealers, but women collectors too.
You have to be anomalous to end up in Las Vegas. But you tell me who is feeding (nurturing!) those slot machines? Women! And who collects all the money (gathering!) ? Men.
The Statehood Quarters are a good set to start with, also the SBA would be a good set for the beginner (not many of them and they are not much over face value). Another thought, a Whitman’s blue folder for Lincoln Memorial Cents. She could look through your parents pocket change to fill holes and you will find out if she has any interest in the hobby or not with minimum investment. Did you ever get a “Red Book”? If so, let your little sister borrow it and see if there is a design that she is interested in. PS to add: If after looking at your “Red Book”, she decides that she likes the $20 St. Gaudens then tell her to do really good in school so she can get a high paying job or find a rich husband.
I think the quarters would be a good place to start, just get her a cheap folder to put them in. That is after all how most of us started collecting. Find a wheat cent and stick it in the folder.
Most young girls have no knowledge about Imelda Marcos, so their habits come naturally to them. It isn't sexist. It's a fact, Jack! Chris
I was thinking getting her a coin folder may help with the collecting...either one for the state / NP quarters you're giving her, or one for another series....
