Coin shows come in many different shapes and sizes, from small one day coin club shows to major multiple day shows. In general I'm willing to drive about 2 hours each way to check out a new show. How far will you go?
I have driven to Chicago many times, more than 5 hours from where I live. It depends completely on the quality of the show IMHO.
I live about 20 minutes from Baltimore. The only show I have been to is the Whitman coin show. It is probably the only one I'd go to.
I voted 5 hours or more. If the show was large enough, I'd travel further. I would like to attend the FUN show one of these years.
2 hours, unless you count taking a vacation with the family where a major coin show just happens to be occurring. =)
Went with 2 hours, but of course it depends on the size of the show and if dealers I'd like to see are going to be there.
I haven't had a chance to go farther, but I live in southern california and have been to the Las Vegas and Laughlin ones. So about 4 hours. I would drive father though If I had the time and money. We have plenty of local ones around here though. Long Beach Expo and Ontario are probably the biggest ones. Some smaller ones are great too.
Living in the sticks, as I do the nearest ones for me are Westford, Ma & Auburn, Ma. A couple of hours at least.
Dunno why you'd need to drive 1000 miles when you've got the FUN show right in your back yard. I doubt anything within 1000 miles of you compares to that.
The pole should have "0" hours as an option. It doesn't. Not everyone drives nor has a personal vehicle. Public transportation, commuter trains and planes are all options I would explore for distances over two hours of comparable driving time, IF, all other factors are the same. But the other variables throw off this scenario of driving times that I think each individual has to consider. Do I want to drive in traffic from NYC to Baltimore for a Whitman Expo? Not really, because there are tolls and traffic situations which are always changing, presenting the potential for major delays. What might take 3 hours or so to drive without any traffic could easily turn into 5 frustrating hours. If someone lives in a remote area and drives to a coin show in an equally remote area where traffic is unlikely to impact ones commuting time to/from the show, their answer will reflect a much different reality from those who commute in/out of urban areas of greater density, and anything in between. What about an individuals consideration of fuel costs and whether or not they will have to pay for parking or find a secure lot (as secure parking is a good thing to seek at a coin show), as well. This too can impact one's decision on how much time to spend driving. I don't think the poll is going to be reflective of an overall picture of what people are willing to tolerate in terms of driving times and probably doesn't take into consideration things like how much free time one has at their disposal to choose how many hours they are willing to spend (some people don't have the luxury of time), how passionate about driving they are, whether they have a fear of flying that forces them to drive, whether or not Mom will take the unlicensed YN to the show X-miles away, how devoted they are to collecting and how that drives them to drive themselves to a show...
I haven't been to many. There is one by my parents house, so that's about a 3 hour train ride door to door. Im hoping to make the Baltimore show next year, and I think its about 5 hours each way by train. When I travel to remote control drag races, they are all over, so 18 hours to Florida isn't a problem for me.
2 1/2 hours from baltimore and about a three hour plane ride to Chicago. Those are the farthest shows I have ever been to.
True, but since I've driven nonstop from Ft. Myers to Las Vegas for a pool tournament, a radius of 1000 miles (or so) would probably cover Baltimore, St. Louis, Atlanta, New Orleans and any other fair-sized cities that might host a coin show. Chris
Yea, Baltimore would come in just under a thousand I think, but it's really not as good as the FUN show is it?
