Hello All, I've been going through a bunch of old rolled change and have noticed that many of the 1993 quarters, dimes, and nickels have picked up an even golden toning. None of the other years have it. Anyone know if the mint was messing around with the metal alloys that year? Just curios. Thanks.
Toning is a reaction to the environment. There are many factors that cause different colors and range of colors. If these rolls were stored at the same location, that could be the cause of the toning. It could also be the bank wrapper. The Mint was not changing the formula during the 90's.
What the Mint has done on several occasions though is to change the composition of the wash they use to clean the planchets. This alone can change or cause coins to tone in a specific way. Not saying the Mind did this in '93 - they never tell. Just that it is another possibility.
