First up is an 1867 No Ray DDO/RPD I picked this one up last Saturday at a coin show in Virgina. Not only does it have an DDO but a Re punched date......and more.... First notice the doubling on the cross , shield, arrow head, leaves and berries. Next have a look at that date . but most of all what really made me pull the trigger is this.....look at RL #3 Notice the lines that come off it. also notice that the outer leaf on #3 Right leaves so faint. Then follow them......across the shield. These lines run thru the Gules and Argent, and Paleways. They also run thru the right scroll! This nickel has the reverse hub lla . This one may have to be submitted as I believe it's an R1 and maybe grade an MS-63 or better.
I have always liked them. A lot of different varieties , and some really neat " CUD's " yours is very nice !
Next up is a cherry pick from a coin show two weeks ago! an 1869 hub llb "Missing leaf." I say she grades a solid F. But the point I'm making is that here's something a YN can get into at a very reasonable cost. If you like varieties these types can be found with a very low budget such as a YN would have. This coin was $15. Shields offer the YN a chance to build a variety set for next to nothing. There are to date more undiscovered varieties on shield nickels then there are ones that have been found and listed in Cherry Pickers! Here's a hint to all YN's.... cherry pick these and then flip them for higher items you wish to add to your collection. Or build yourself a very cool set of variety shield nickels. BTW that little thingy sticking out the left side of the Ball.... well it's called a misplaced date the flag of the 1 that also added to the missing leaf by a nice chunk of change for that variety.
Maybe it's time to see if there's some meat on them.....give them another once over you may find some varieties .
All coins are fun to collect. old guys like me are in tune to the old stuff where they had it hard to produce them!
What I would like to hear is from senior members as to what they think about the lines? They are not incuse ....so they had to be cut into the die. Look carefully you can follow them thru the Gules and looks to me that in between been polished out of the flat areas.
Hmm. Quick question on the first coin. I am by no means an expert on shield nickels...in fact I know very little about them. But the doubling to me looks very flat and shelf-like, and the fact that the doubling seems to occur in the same direction on the design as well as the date has me thinking that this may be another form of doubling besides a DDO or RPD. Also look how the doubling seems to "take away" from the date rather than add to it. I also don't see any distinctive notching standing out on the coin. Thoughts? Maybe some of the other variety gurus can help out here. @furryfrog02 @jallengomez
Have a lot of 1856 3-cents with that same kind of lines or as some say scratches !They seem to be deliberate done ?
That's my take on it....as all were coined in Philadelphia and during that time frame the use of rum as well as other spirts was allowed . Yes just like the British Navy they had tea time only the tea was Rum! I also entertained that maybe that die was canceled and then someone said hey we need it. Give it a quick hit clean it up and back into production. At that time I'm quite sure no one was worried about some hundred and Thirty seven years later would be talking about their work......or even care to.
Today I'll post this 1869/69 RPD You'll find this one in the Cherry Pickers guide it's an FS #-005.3 with an URS -4 Repunched date It' looks to be a wide date over a skinny one. You'll see the date to the south of the primary date PUP the date notice the flag of the skinny 1 on the left side of the primary 1 about a 1/3 the way down. You'll also see the 6 and 9have the secondary numbers south of the primary numbers.
The next one will be an 1868 DDO+RPD. you'll notice that this one is an DDO as seen by the doubling PUP shield, anulet, leaves and cross. The date is repunched and the first 8 is high touching the ball.the date slants to the right and is the reverse hub lla. cherry pickers list this variety as FS 35-003.9 has an URS of 4
Someone mention of cuds on Shield nickels here's a very cool on I found listed on e bay. It's not my coin just saved the image as it is one very cool cud! I sort of wished now I had bid on this one as I find it to be very appealing and it really has the WOW Factor! an 1867 shield where the cud with the word GOD in it looks to be 3D as it is a raised cud.
Yeah I so wish I had pulled the trigger on this one! There was a angle shot showing the thickness of the cud too. I wish I had saved. Who ever got this one sure has a great example of a cud to say the least.
Some nice coins. I'll just add - the DDO/RPD on the 1867 in the first post is not actually. That is machine doubling - note the flat, shelf-like appearance. I really like the RPD on the 1869.
That's your opinion others have seen it in hand, and said it's a DDO. Not MD. As stated shields have more varieties undisc overed then are listed in CPG.. Note the cross is doubled as well as the amulet, confirmed by a tpg at the show where purchased.
