I picked this up recently for under $10 not knowing a thing about it save for the extraordinary highly defined strike and original patina. Does anyone have a sense of what the coin is worth in its given condition and is it worth getting it slabbed? Much Thanks
It's a very nice coin, but not worth getting it slabbed. These are not really that hot on the market unless you get a key date or a nice UNC example and this is one of the most common ones in AU. You still did pretty well at under $10 though.
Very nice looking coin. I can't give you any information as far as current market value, but it certainly looks like a nice addition for what you paid. What would be your drive for having it slabbed. Would you enjoy the coin more if it were graded by a TPG.
Dutch catalog price for these is 30 euro's, with as rule of thumb, you can buy them for half. So you did well on this one. They are not rare, here a somewhat later one:
It is an attractive coin. The 2009 Krause catalog gives this data: Date: 1906 Mintage: 8,000,000 Fine: 2.00 VF: 3.50 XF: 6.50 Unc: 20.00 BU: 35.00
I'm admiring this coin very much, but you should be wearing gloves at all times when handling copper or brass coins in that type of condition. I'm just sayin'.
These are lovely coins. Since the devices are so intricate, it's worth getting them in AU and above - you need to see all the details to fully appreciate them. I also have one of 1929... I particularly like the seahorse mint mark...
