Latest addition to my tetradrachm collection is a Trajan Decius I got for $30 total. What looks like crust on the cheek is actually some wear on the silver thats toned. Trajan Decius (249 - 251 A.D.) Billon Tetradrachm Syria, Seleucis and Pieria O: AYT K Γ ME KY TPAIANOC ΔEKIOC CEB, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right; Z below. R: ΔHMAPX EΞOYCIAC / S C. Eagle standing left on palm branch, wreath in beak. 26mm 11.5g Prieur 548
That's an incredibly nice coin for $30. Holy crap. I wouldn't have blinked an eye if you had said $60. Astute shopping, man.
Nice! Mine has three dots where yours has the Z. They come with one to five dots , S and Z for workshops. We find a similar system on some antoniniani of Treboninianus but using Roman numerals for higher numbers rather than Greek but I have seen none on ants of Decius.
Very nice. I've been wanting one of those Syrian eagles for awhile now. I've never seen one that low of price. Are there more where you purchased it?
Great coins, fellas ... Trajan Decius AR Tetradrachm 249-251AD Trajan Decius & Eagle with Wreath .... hmmm? ... what does my example have, an "H" a "I" or a scrunched "Z"?
Wow Mat, 30 $, that's a deal for a more than decent example ! Mine and its four dots : Trajan Decius, Tetradrachm AVG KG TTEKY DEKIOY TPAIANOC CEB, Laureate and draped bust of Trajan Decius right. Four dots under bust DHMAPXEX OYCIAC, Eagle standing left, holding wreath in beak, SC at exergue 13,56 gr Ref : RC #2723, Prieur #528 Q
Great buy! And interesting note from Doug. I've seen those dots before but assumed they were decoration or the remnants of worn letters.
Hey Doug, now I'm kinda curious? I noticed that my sweet example was the only example with a radiate crown (then I panicked, thinking it was fake and/or that it wasn't an AR Tetradrachm, etc, etc, which is a typical fight-or-flight stevex6 panic-reaction!!) ... however, I checked-out the good ol' CNG historical libraries (a sweet, sweet resource) and I was happy to discover that there were a few more of "my-type", with the radiate crown ... https://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?PAGE_NUM=&PAGE=1&TABS_TYPE=2&CONTAINER_TYPE_ID=3&IS_ADVANCED=1&ITEM_DESC=Trajan Decius AR Tetradrachm&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_1=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1 ... so now I'm kinda curious? => is one type more rare/less-frequently-seen? Oh, and maybe somebody other than our guru, Doug, knows the answer to my question? (thanks in advance, fellas) => I must comment that it's amazingly good times coining with you guys (I sense that the majority of you are a squadron of good-****s) I appreciate your coin-friendship and your amazing coin-knowledge!! I hope you dudes have an amazing holiday season (cheers) Oh => and please don't forget that I've asked a question!!
I do not know the difference but it does not seem to be weight. I believe that radiates are much less common. Did you notice that they come with Decius before Trajanus as well as after. Why? Who was it that said that the more you learn about this stuff the more you are aware of how much you do not know?
