Another of my latest purchases arrived in the post yesterday and it's another Hadrian Denarius. This makes my 11th coin of Hadrian (probably still counting). And no, I am not competing with Okidoki. I would never catch him in this lifetime. I just liked the looks of this particular coin. HADRIAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate bust right, drapery on far shoulder REVERSE: VOT (left), PVB (right), “public vows,” in the field. PM TR P COS III, “Pontifex Maximus, endowed with tribunician power, Consul for the third time, Pietas standing, hands extended before her Struck at Rome, 121 AD 3.46g. 17mm RIC II 141 VOT_PVB stands for Vota Pvblica, Latin: State (official)vows (prayers). Hadrian was the cousin of Trajan with whom he had a rocky love-hate relationship. However, his relationship with Trajan turned out to be less consequential to his own rise to becoming emperor. It is widely thought that Trajan himself never actually selected Hadrian as his successor but his powerful aunt, who was very fond of Hadrian and took the role of surrogate mother, forged documents to the effect when Trajan was on his deathbed. Hadrian is remembered chiefly by his active role in the military, by the prolific building of all sorts of city and military improvements, by being a shrewd economic strategist as well as for his infamous homosexual relationship with a boy named Antinous. Post any Hadrian, Pietas or any related coins.
I like the reverse of that coin as it combines so many themes: his titles, vota, and Pietas. Nice choice!
What a great coin, Bing... nice type, well-centered, and just about the right amount of wear. Hadrian has a lot of interesting coins... this galley reverse was one of the first ancient types I was drawn to and actively sought. HADRIAN AE As 10.26g, 25mm Rome mint, 124 - 128 AD RIC 673 O: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head right. R: COS III above, S C in exergue, galley rowed right by three oarsmen, at the stern is a hortator and an arched cabin under a curved aplustre, at the bow a mast raking forward with flag and sails attached. Hello Ken, welcome to CT! Nice coin, but the mods don't allow advertising on the discussion threads. There are sub-forums (at the bottom of the main page) dedicated to posting your auctions and private offerings. Peace!
