On Saturday December 6, 2014 an individual was caught stealing two rolls of Silver Eagles. The dealer who uses hi-def cameras at his table recorded the incident. The subject was identified as Harold Fare and currently lives in Oklahoma. Authorities banned Mr.Fare from any future shows. Doug Davis 817-723-7231 or Doug@Numismaticcrimes.org
Is that photo Mr. Fare? I'm very bad with faces, but I'm thinking I've seen at least a dozen guys who look like that at nearly every show I've ever attended...
I think I recognize that guy. He was arrested before. Here is the previous mugshot Never trust a man in a flowery dress.
Wait, are you saying the photo in the OP is "hi-def" ? Or are there other images you are not showing?
I agree, quite a few shifty and unscrupulous ones. I see the dealer who robbed me once at a dead show, he was the only one to look through my stuff. When I gave a description to a collector later he said he had heard the same thing about him but there was nothing I could do. Good to see more high tech gadgets catching these thieves. Low resolution picture was from the numismatic crime center.
The problem is it is usually difficult to get the dealers to press charges. Often the thefts are done on dealers from out of state who would have to keep coming back to town for court dates only to have it delayed to a later time (which doesn't happen until AFTER they have made the trip) and they would have to come back again. And this can happen multiple times. So the dealer says just give me my coins back and I won't press charges. You also often have the problem of trying to get the prosecutor to actually prosecute the case. Unless it is for a LOT of money they would rather just plea bargain it down to get rid of it or even just drop the charges altogether just to keep it from clogging the docket. Instead of Grand Theft, plead guilty to shoplifting for a hundred dollar fine and time served.
My Italian friends back in Boston would take a "waffle maker" framing hammer and turn the thieves' fingers into soup spoons. No more stealing for them....
Torture and disfigurement are wrong. And in this case the guy must have been careless but was fortunately caught. The worst ones don't get caught and have crime sprees of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Thieves get put in legal hell as well they should be at least for a while. But the biggest thieves, the white collar types doing insider trading, get off. As Kierkegaard said the greatest transgressions don't get punished in this life, they await the timeless soul punishment.....
Assuming those thieves have a conscience. Most of them are sociopaths and psychopaths who have no soul.
I remember about 20 years ago at the brimfield ma antique show and flea market they caught someone stealing. A bunch of dealers hauled the guy out to the parking lot out back and beat the crap outta him. Was a good thing I think. I've lost several thousand dollars of stuff to theft there over the last 20 years. Only show I've really had a theft problem but there's just so many people I'd love to catch someone!
