200-year-old US time capsule recovered from block of granite
from BBC News on 12/12/2014 ** There's a short video at the link. **

"A time capsule dating back to 1795 has been recovered from the granite cornerstone of the statehouse in Massachusetts.

Among its contents are thought to be a collection of old coins, an engraved silver plate and newspapers.

Originally made of cowhide, it is understood the capsule was first removed in 1855 and its contents transferred to a copper box to avoid further deterioration.

Secretary of State William Galvin said the fact that box seemed to be in such good condition suggested that its contents had been "pretty well preserved."

It was taken to the Museum Of Fine Arts to be X-rayed before being opened."

yup, I'm still waiting to hear about the coins. "coins that date between 1652 and 1855" What are they the cable company? Couldn't they narrow it down just a bit when there are only four coins??

Four only? I don't think so. :) "The time capsule that was chiseled out of a stone block at the State House on Thursday likely contains a collection of more than a dozen coins (...)" This article has a few more details.

the coins that have been revealed so far were actually added for good luck by whomever mortared the box into the stone. They fell out while it was being chipped out. the coins were not immediately readable. The box is still intact and nothing from inside has been seen.

I don't understand how they knew that there were "coins from 1652" if they had not opened it yet??
