1961 half dollar and 1928 quarter. I got the standing Liberty for $5 and the Franklin for $10, which, according to ebay, are reasonable prices. I might have gotten a deal on the half. They obviously haven't been graded, but what would you estimate their grades to be? The Franklin looks to be MS 60 or at least a high AU to my untrained eyes while the standing Liberty appears to be in F condition. How far am I off? Did I get decent deals? I like them and I don't think I paid too much for them but it's always nice to get a good deal. I ask these questions because I'm trying to learn as much as I can about grading.
The Half doesn't look UNC. In fact, it doesn't look AU either. When buying Franklin Halves, particularly late date ones, the coins should have phenomenal luster. This coin looks to have impaired luster and potentially damage on Franklin's jawbone. Good news is that you didn't get hurt, but don't settle on late date Frankies. Look for coins that have outstanding surfaces, or don't pay a premium at all.
I see some rubs on the high spots on the Frankie also a couple heavy bag marks it saw some circulation
I don't have the hang of taking photos of coins. I'll try to take some better pics but I can't promise they will be any better.
Looked again (on main computer) and it probably has wear... here is a short video on how to grade the Franklins... May be of use to you
I think your Franklin is only worth about 6.00 so you didn't get the deal on it... but as an example to look at it is a good one to study... you can start identifying the things that make it what it will grade and then you will be better able to judge a coin as to if it is circulated or not and where to start looking for wear and breaks in luster. Probably the SLQ is "Good".... here is a link to a grading page for those: http://coinauctionshelp.com/how_to_grade_standing_liberty_quarters.html#.VIzt0ivF95M
Hey always better to have a bottle in front of me then a frontal lobotomy. I had my 2 drinks for the night half still looks au quarter still good
