The Mint still does not produce rarities. Nor are these NA coins rare. They were designed to sell out at the Mint, not designed to be rare. The Mint met demand, but didn't produce a rarity, not at 50k. The demand beyond 50k is driven by aftermarket hype. When these start fetching prices competitive with and sustainable to key date coins which were actually produced for circulation they might start to be considered rare. As I said before they are far from this and these are going to be preserved far and wide far more than our known key date rarities have been.

As always Chris, I love your take, but I still want one for the Dansco and it looks like I'm gonna get one......:)

No problem with wanting one and collecting them. We're just discussing the idea of (instant) rarity and if NIFC coins can be considered rare right out of the gate.

Chris, you and I both know that we never indulge in 'Never Land'......:)

Saw the "Who" on concert when they were first starting out. I don't remember this one, though. You must have quite a musical library, either at home, or in your memory.

Can only key date coins produced for circulation be considered rare? What is the last one with a mintage below 50,000?

How many key dates that were not NIFC now remain in quantities of 50,000? Or even approaching that number?

At this point we have a decent history of NIFC coins (more than 100 years) and history shows with a mintage of 50k, these should perform well. However they perform, at $13.95, they're worth the risk. I’ll bet $1,395 put into these sets will provide a much higher rate of return than $1,395 put into a gold Kennedy, or any number of what are considered classic key date coins, like the 1909-s vdb cent. And, aside from investment potential, I like the coin and series, which may not be an aside, as popular coins perform better.

If there is a "hole" for them in the albums it may also add to demand. Only time will tell.

There have been "holes" for rare key and semi key dates in old Whitman and Dansco folders that many collectors would like to fill, but which for many past decades have remained empty in most collections. A lot of demand and desire to fill those holes exists, but the supply is short and the value too high for many budgets. The supply is much shorter than 50k in most cases too. It's not that hard, nor costly to fill the holes of 50k NA folders, which have yet even to be produced and sold.

Copper or clad vs. gold... Let's see, can you afford a 1909-S VDB? Maybe... but can you afford a 1909-O Half Eagle? Probably not. Go with today's price of $1395 on the Kennedy gold for the long road gamble in value to that of it's golden dollar cousin at $13.95 today, which most collectors will long have a better shot at owning, and with a supply of 50K dollars struck in a metal of no intrinsic value to that of a proven commodity which holds it's own, and from time to time excels in value. The gold Kennedy is also more prone to being melted over the years for its precious metals content and lower the mintage originally produced. Not everyone today can afford the gold Kennedy, but most can afford the golden dollar.

Yeah, but you can but 100 2014 C&C set's for the same price as 1 gold Kennedy. Those 100 sets should return much more than the 1 gold Kennedy or 09-s vdb in the long run and will definitely return more in the short run.

Not with a household limit of 5 and the coins currently back ordered.

The Kennedy coins have been limited to 75,000 units and household limits lifted.

Household limits, who doesn't game the system if they wish?

This is why these coins are destined to fail as rarities. People know those who do this are playing the system and the values are artificial. This past summer's antics over the release of the gold Kennedy coins left a sour taste in the mouths of many collectors and more reputable dealers.

Well time will tell. Past issues have done well. As a matter of fact, my modern "rarities" have done much better than my classics.

Unfortunately, the market for these may be held down by the flippers who bought 100 or more sets and flood the market to cover the charge. They may be falling all over themselves to dump them at less than issue price. Once the dust settles, uh, $100 or more per raw set.

I received a set of 5 today that was ordered on the 10th. Still have not received or gotten shipping info for the 30 I ordered on the 4th. None of my 5 in hand would grade 70... one has a cool gash on the cheek of the girl indian. Looks like a big battle scar.

Maybe the Mint figured out you were getting more than five units, the current household limit! :D Though they are showing back ordered until the 18th of this week. Got any picks of the damaged piece?

I hope the order of 5 does not screw up my order of 30, but I can see it happening. I had them shipped to different addresses, but used the same card. I will try to get a pic of the battle scar later today
