I am trying to find out if this coin is authentic or not. Weight is 26.8 grams. Would appreciate your help.
Krause says 26.4, characters look good, should have vertical reeding. I think it's good but I'm no expert and if the Chinese can't make good fakes of their own coins I'd be shocked.
I can't get a decent pic with my camera...Did some more research from what I read and seen I'm 99.9% positive it's real.
The only thing that would concern me are the denticles being much more prominent at 6:00 than at 12:00 and on both sides, but especially the obverse. I suppose if you can find a real one on eBay (etc) to compare it to, perhaps that is normal.
They look fairly even with no overlapping . Take a look at a similar sized coin . If you look at a Morgan they are fairly even but not all identical .
It has lots of little blobs on the surface, most prominent in the center of the reverse. I would pass on this one.
Good eye , I missed those . With all the little red flags I'd wait for a better one as the color just doesn't look right either . Though that can be the lighting .
Good point, but those can be from circulation damage or improper cleaning. Seen that before. Weight is good, definitely silver, rim looks good, denticles are ok - not unusual to be more prominent at 6 o'clock than at 12. I don't see any red flag except for the weight that I thought it was supposed to be 26.4 but after hours of reading found out it can be more - not unusual up to 26.9
Those surface blobs are not from any form of circulation, damage or cleaning. They are original to when the coin was made. And since this is a type of coin that is well known to have been widely counterfeited in full weigh/purity silver, I would spend my money on one without the major red flags.
Thank you Numismat for your opinions. Waiting for more opinions, I already bought this - need to know whether to return or not. Here's better pics
