Here is another new republic I acquired in the trade when I got my "scoop" republic. L. CAECILIUS METELLUS (96 B.C.) AR Denarius O: L METEL A ALB S F, laureate head of Apollo right; star below. R: C MALL, ROMA in exergue, Roma seated left on pile of arms, being crowned by Victory. Rome Mint 3.9g 21mm RCV 220
I love the coin Mat. I tried to find information regarding this moneyer or the symbolism on the reverse, but all I could find was that there is not much to find. He was a triumvir of the mint whose name is only known from the coins he had struck with his name. The other colleagues of this triumvir were A. Albinus and L. Caecilius. If I am right, the obverse on your coin should mention these other two moneyers:
If the only historical record of the moneyer is on his money, can we assume his political career failed?
Ive seen some writeups on some VC examples, but yeah, not alot written on this fellow. Thanks for the comments.
wow, super-cool RRs fellas ... I'm totally jealous (man, it's been quite a while since I've bought an AR RR ... I've bought a few AE RRs, but not a classic Bing-type) => oh again, Mat => that's a very cool pick-up (yummy)
I need to clear up something. The coin I posted above is not mine. I only used the image as an example showing the names a little clearer. Sorry about that. (I wish it were mine)
