Found this in a roll of pennies. Not sure what it is. Anybody?

It's a blank planchet. Planchets are what coins start out as before they are struck by the dies.

That's what I originally thought, but I wanted an opinion from the "experts". But what are the odds that I would find one in a "Loomis" penny roll? Does it have any value (not that I would sell it)?

turbotim88 - I've found one in all of my roll searching. They are out there though pretty far and few between(at least in my experience). Since they are essentially cents, same weight, dimensions, etc... they will still make it through coin machines and stuff and end up in rolls. As far as value, they usually only tend to bring a few bucks. Still pretty cool.

Just curious - Is it a copper or zincoln?

The US Mint gives these things away(or at least they used to) to people who tour the mint facilities. They're not that rare and can usually be found for a couple of bucks.

Thanks for all of the info on this subject. This is the first one of these I've seen in person. I've seen pictures and read about them, but never thought I'd actually "find" one. By the way, mine is definately copper. I'll hold onto it, it's a good conversation piece.

Definitely a keeper. Especially since you found it roll searching.

I have found them in BWR and CWR, and also in change. It is cool to think that nobody noticed them before you came across them.

  11. Cool find! Congrats

  12. no, it's not an error or anything, so it is probably worth... say, $1.50 for a souvenier.
