A nice article was posted on coinweek regarding what is the "last ancient coin". http://www.coinweek.com/featured-news/last-ancient-coin/
Cool thread ... ummm, it makes me want to run out and buy myself a Zeno Hmmm? ... I'd better wait until after Christmas (this is the season to be thinking of others, before ourselves) ..... ummmm ohhhh, but maybe my wife would enjoy a sweet X-mas Zeno? Yah, what could go wrong? (thanks for the great gift-hint, Mat)
I hate buying people gifts. I just give them the money and say get what you want. Much better than getting something useless or something you like as a gift that they wouldn't like. Too difficult for me to figure out, serious.
=> that's the spirit!! WalMart cash-cards (seriously, what kid doesn't grow-up dreamin' of those babies, eh?)
This year I'm getting my sister a gift card. That gift card will be tied to a helium-filled balloon, nestled alongside more helium-filled balloons inside a large box. When she opens it - balloons everywhere!
Well, the article is right about the Zeno's bronzes: "...the miserable little bronzes are rarely found in a collectable grade." If you're specializing in Late Roman/Early Byzantine, that's one thing, but I wouldn't go looking for a "nice" Zeno unless you've got a lot of cash to burn. The only coins I've seen in acceptable grades start at $500, and those coins don't even look as good as my ratty Nabataeans.
Sorry for derailing the thread but yeah, I would love to have some of those late Roman gold coins. At least you would know for sure what the emperor is, the bronzes are usually questionable at best for identification.
Steve, with your Vandal and Byzantine, that will be the third time you've recently intruded upon my territory. Don't make me bring out the big guns (JK)
I think my Zeno is pretty acceptable, and I only paid around $30 for it. Still haven't reshot this one but the details stand out some more in hand. Almost got a rare (but really crappy but cheap) AE2 of Zeno but that got lost in the mail... What I really, really want is a Zeno struck by King Odoacer of Italy.
See now, that's got good detail for a Zeno, at a fair price. I think the dealers that currently stock these are equating rarity with market value. I'm sorry, but there just isn't a chance in hell I'm paying $200 for such a coin. If I found one for $30, I would snap it up.
=> sorry Jango ... wow, my bad (I am backing-up slowly ... there is no problem here ... relax .... *awkward* ... all of the Zeno coins are yours, my friend!!)
Here is a Zeno for $55, been up there for a few years I think. .96g Head of Zeno right Type 1 monogram of Zeno RIC X 958 or 964 Thesalonika or Nikomedia
Yep. Vcoins is chock-full of coins I've made offers on, and there they sit, year after year. Eventually some of them go on sale though. I scored big last week: $50 off on one coin, $45 on another, $25 on a third.
