My new Trajan Trajan AE As Victory with shield SPRQ.jpg
    AE As 27mm, 12.96g
    Rome
Obverse: IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM P M, Laureate head of Trajan right.
    Reverse: TR POT COS IIII P P S C, Victory walking left hlding shield inscribed S P Q R.
    RIC434

I really like the reverse...looks like Victory is driving hard for the hoop! And check out those wings!

If real, it is a nice coin! I have doubts though, does anyone else? The "melty" way the devices join the flan, the portrait style... I don't see it in Forvm's fake list or on forgerynetwork so hopefully I'm wrong. I've certainly been wrong many times before :)

I thought the same when I first looked at it, but wasn't certain so I wanted to wait till someone else responded more knowledgeable then I. The portrait seems wrong and the detail seems just too good. JBG, don't take anything I say to the bank. Wait till others chime in. I'm as likely to be wrong as I am right.

I won't take it to the bank, just back to the guy who sold it! I'm a good complainer. What think ya'll?

Here's one from Acsearch...now they both look fake to me!

Hate to say it, but at first glance I was slightly dubious too. Not that I have much experience with Trajan, but the style seems a little off, for me the reverse. And the way the edge of Victory's dress overlaps the last P on the reverse seems abit odd. Hope we're all wrong about it!

Another reference from Acsearch were the laureate rolls onto the legend?

Hi JBG ... man, I sure hope that your cool new coin turns out to be a winner (I suck at the fake-spotting game)

=> here is one of my Trajan examples

I don't consider myself qualified to comment on the authenticity of your OP coin JBGood.

But I'll add my Trajan to the mix.

We need Doug, Pierre, Martin, John Anthony to weigh in on this authenticity-wise. I can take it guys! I bought a $10K diamond once that....never mind.

Im leaning towards the coin being OK. But some fakes are real good.

I don't think the two portraits are alike at all.

I don't either, what I'm pointing out is distinct nose shape variation on all the portraits. Mine looks too small compared to most I think.

Hard to be sure just from the pics, but I too would tend toward authentic... The coin look struck to me, details are strong, devices are sharp... At first glance I also thought that the style (reverse) was "off", but comparing with others, it seems quite ok... Did not find any others from the same dies though...

A detail that, to me, is somehow important... The reddish spot on Trajan cheek, a common type of deposits on "real" ancients...

The coin might have been repatinated also, more or less recently, something that could give it its "not perfectly natural look"...

What is the reddish spot? That was freaking me out more than anything.

Nothing bad, just some sort of benign deposits...
