mmmmm, yummy-yummy-yummy!! I love the quadriga (totally jealous of your new addition) Wow, randygeki => I love those sweet ol' Antoninus Pius Sestertii ... Ummm, I happen to have a couple of those cool babies as well ...
Good examples folks Randy, I do like the rendering of an evenly (heavenly ?) worn sestertius : soft in hand, and witness of hundred (thousands) of trades... A nice coin that tells a story I can show two Pius sestertii, the first one not in my collection any more : Antoninus Pius, Sestertius minted in Rome, 159/160 AD ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TRP XXIII, Laureate head of Antoninus right PIETATI AVG COS IIII, Pietas standing left, holding child, and two children at her feet, SC in field 26,32 gr Ref : Cohen #621, RCV #4205 Antoninus Pius, Sestertius Rome mint, AD 140/144 ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III, laureate head right PROVIDENTIAE DEORVM, winged thunderbolt, S - C in field 25.86 gr, 31 mm Ref : Cohen #682, RCV # 4208, RIC III # 618 Q
Antoninus Pius Æ Orichalcum Sestertius. 24.2g, 34mm OBV: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVIII, Laureate head right. REV: LIBERTAS COS IIII S C, Libertas standing left holding purse and extending hand. REF: Cohen 543. RIC III 929 This is a scanner photo, so it looks a bit "mushy". I'm going to be shooting it soon with a decent camera. Still low grade so don't expect too much improvement. lol This is my first Antoninus Pius and first Sestertius. I was impressed by how hefty this coin was when I first received.
Thanks! Some more cool coins! Well said! They have a 'worry stone' quality to them that makes you think/wonder. Here is a Misses Pius to go along with the op.
How about the loving pair: ANTONIUS PIUS AE 25 OBVERSE: AVTO KAI TI AIL ADRI ANTWNINOC CEEBV, laureate head right REVERSE: IOVLIEWN TWN KAI LAODIKEWN, turreted and draped bust of Tyche right; QE-HP P in fields Struck at Laodikeia ad Mare, 140-141 AD 9.28g, 25mm SNG Copenhagen 350 var, BMC 57 FAUSTINA Sr AE Sestertius OBVERSE: DIVA FAVSTINA, draped bust right REVERSE: AETERNITAS S-C, Aeternitas seated left holding phoenix & scepter Struck at Rome, 147 AD 24.53g, 34 mm RIC 1103A
