The local gold and silver exchange is selling Series 1963 uncirculated $2 bills for $9. How bad of a deal is that? I may buy one even if it is a poor deal just because the only red $2 bill I have is in rough shape.
I can get mint condition Series 1963 red seal $2 bills at the bank? Maybe if you went back in time to the mid sixties. I don't think my bank even carries $2 bills.
I get change at the banks all the time. Why wouldn't they have $2 bills? And you might find anything. You wrote that you had only one, a ratty one, and I figured you could easily do better than that at a bank, with multiple dates and various conditions. I was not aware you were speaking specifically of mint 1963's.
I thought you were speaking of $2 bills generically, and wanted something better than you had. In that case, you could probably find one at the bank at face value, and maybe even several different years. But you are looking for a mint, high grade. You never know what you can find in circulation, but its iffy and time consuming. Looking at it, $9 for $2 seems high, but $9 for a 51 year old collectible is good. In the scheme of things, $9 is not a lot of money.
Nah I wanted an an uncirculated red seal bill. I already have a red seal $2 but it's in rough shape. To be technical, it probably isn't quite 51 years old because the Series 1963 bills were printed for several years. You've twisted my arm. I think I'm going to go buy one on Monday. They have several bills, so if any of them are worth more than $15 or so I'll buy all of them and try to flip them for some cash.
And as far as finding rarities in circulation, yesterday I got an 1884-O Morgan that somebody had spent at a nearby bodega. It's in rather good shape (at least XF, several posters on another forum said it was AU) and has some nice yellowish toning. It's going into my forever collection. Here's a picture of the Morgan. Don't crucify me if you don't think it's AU, because I have no idea. I'm no expert on grading. All I know is that it is a beautiful coin and the price was right (four quarters). You can't tell by my pictures, but it has some nice light yellow toning. The best $1 I've ever spent in my life, for sure. I assume it's worth $30-$35 but I've already been offered $50 for it. Sorry to hijack my own thread, but here it is...
I think it is fine spending it on it. It's not a lot of money, plus convenience of buying it in person no shipping, instant buy.
