There is a small convenience store in the apartment complex I used to live in. I got to know the owner while I lived there, and he stuck back any coin larger than a quarter that he received for me. I got lucky and got a 40% Kennedy (1968) one day and I got an Ike but it was mostly post-1970 halves that he stuck back for me. Today I was visiting my friend who still lives in that complex and walked to the store to buy a Coke. The owner wasn't there, instead a woman was working there. I heard her talking to another lady behind the counter and it was obvious her English wasn't very good. She rang up my Coke and I asked her if she had any "big coins" and she said "yes". I thought she just didn't understand me at first. I was thinking maybe she had a clad Kennedy or possibly an Ike if I was lucky. She pulled out a large coin and my heart started racing. I thought it was an Ike (which would have still made me happy) but my jaw hit the floor when I saw that it was an 1884-O Morgan! I said "I want it!" and gave her 4 quarters for it. It is obviously nowhere near AU condition but has a tad bit of yellowish toning. This beats any of the finds I made at my old job at the convenience store by a long shot. I'm still in shock but I'm buzzing. I'm guessing it's VF or XF, what do you think? Is it worth from $30-$40? This was the find of a lifetime.
Nice find! My friend is a cashier at Wawa and someone came in with a double eagle and SPENT it! he pulled $20 from his wallet and pocketed the coin! haha. And I would say ~$25
Nice. Don't get me wrong... I'd be stoked, too... but... was it really necessary to post it three times? ;-)
Congrats on the score! I have always been dreaming of finding a silver dollar at face. A couple months back I scored these for face value for a supermarket cashier.
UPDATE: I just got 3 AU 40% Halves for face value from the same place I found the walking liberties, right after posting my first comment, I'm sorry Treashunt and 19lyds LOL
Yes! I wanted everyone to see it. It gives us all hope that there are some rare* coins out there in circulation. I also posted it to another coin forum. *I know it's not rare in an absolute sense, but it's extremely rare in circulation.
I completely agree with you, everyone has the right to know the there are still great coins out there. Most people don't think that there is anything out there anymore. I had a guy show me some walking liberty half dollars he found in a tellers tray in 2013, I figured that he was just extremly lucky and I found never find anything close, he ended up finding 20 walking liberty half dollars in a bank at Maine which sounded impossible to me. I congratulated him, and told him I will probably find one though. You will never guess what I found one year later, I think you know based on my first post in this thread lol. I always ask if they have anything at every bank or store I'm at, I usually never find anything but it is worth asking because it is out there! Just today I asked and scored another 3 40% half dollars in great shape (as mentioned before). My point was, you will never score big if you do not try to. Bugo, I think that you know that just as well as it do.
Way to hijack my thread with your pile of silver....I'm just kidding. Great haul! Very impressive finds. I found lots of unusual coins at my old job but I never found a Walking Liberty half...I'm jealous.
Now that is very lucky!! Spending a $1200+ dollar coin at face value.... I can only dream of that. I have yet to get a single Roosevelt at face!
Wow, a 53? I wouldn't have thought it would be anywhere near that high, but I don't know anything about grading coins. I noticed the scrapes on her cheeks right away and I guess that's partially why I thought it would grade lower. The pictures make it look gold, but it's more silvery with some golden toning. It's really a lovely coin and I couldn't beat the price.
I'm guess that it is an AU-55, maybe AU-58 due to how much detail remains, marks on the coin don't ussally affect the grade of a circulated coin. It is AU because there is wear on the high points. The color will be slightly different on wear on the high points of the coin. If a coin has luster but is worn it is almost always in AU condition. Here is an AU-55 Here is an AU-53 Here is an AU-58 Here is a MS-60 coin Here is your coin, I inverted the colors to help remove any color, that will make it easier to focus on the wear and not the color. Look at the wear on Liberty's hair above her ear, the more worn the lower the grade, you can try to compare your coin with these photos.
