Once again, I've fallen for a cool new Antoninus Pius coin from good ol' Alexandria!! (man, these babies are definitely my wheel-house go-to coins!!) => I love these coins ... big, oddly shaped chunks of cool awesomeness ... EGYPT, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, Æ Obol 138-161 AD Diameter: 18 mm Weight: 5.49 grams Obverse: Dated RY 4 (AD 153/4). Laureate head right Reverse: Dolphin coiled around trident Reference: Köln 1338; Dattari (Savio) 3116; K&G 35.104 Other: 12h … sweet brown and bluish patina From the collection of a Southern Pathologist, purchased from Robert Golan 18 May 1995 => oh, and a fricken wierd dolphin thrown-in for extra coolness!! ... yup, "awesome"
Nice! I like that type a lot, but I wish the engravers had put more detail into the dolphin itself. It always looks flatly-struck, but its just a minimalist conception of the dolphin. Still, great coin!
Funny, Batman kinda dissed this coin as well (huh) ... I looked at this baby and thought "wow, what a cool shape, colour and awesome dolphin twisted around a trident!" ... oh well, every now and then I guess that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (I must see something special in this poor lil' misunderstood example?) ... => "don't listen to their negative comments, my sweet lil' trooper ... live free ... grow high and become the beautiful swan that I see within you!!" I always enjoy coin-critique (often, it is more enjoyable/useful to get slightly negative feedback than the usual atta-boy comments) ... thanks, dawg
Whoa, don't get me wrong. In fact, it's one of the best coins I've seen of this type. All I'm saying is I wish the engravers had put a little more effort into the dolphin, that's all. You know, maybe something like this...
ahahaha => JA, you kill me ... good stuff, my friend (ummm are you, TIF and chrsmat all related?!!) ... very clever Ummmm, but seriously => I talked it over with my pals and they said "hey, cool it with that dolphin stuff!!" I'm just sayin' ...
that's an awesome little coin stevex, nice and thick also...even better. alexandrian coins are pretty darn fantastic. plus.....from a southern pathologist...man.
=> cool coin, Oki ... I'm lovin' it!! ... but your example has a dolphin around an anchor and my example has a dolphin around a trident (obviously very similar, but not exactly the same, my cool friend) ... but again, I'm lovin' your amazing example!!
oh sorry, regardless of that Southern dude, I'm gonna massage my OCD and post all of my other Antoninus Pius Alexandrian examples (please forgive me, my friends)
Well. if thats the case. That coin is ugly and awful. lol You're making it really hard to hold off on buying any ancients for the time been.
man, it's you're beat tired (gawd, where do I start?) "A" is for Antoninus Pius ... ... just jokes, my young friend ... keep-up the good work
