1872 Seated Dollar: real or fake?

    Looks like everyone pretty much agrees . It's real but harshly cleaned or overdipped , too bad as it's a nice coin if it wasn't messed with . You have to remember in the late '70s and even the early '80s they were telling us to clean coins with a baking powder and water paste . So buy an original skinned coin and you'll have a rarity condition wise .

    For comparison, here is my dipped/slightly retoned example, bought off eBay (raw) before I had an idea of what original surfaces looked like...

    This one looks like a harshly cleaned au there's hairline scratches in the obverse fields. And I don't like the scratches in the right obverse field. My call au 55 details harshly cleaned

    Doesn't look abrasive cleaned but looks dipped to death. I agree with the cleaning designation still an attractive coin tho

    Yeah, it is dipped heavily. However, it is a very attractive coin.
