Hello. I believe this big coin weighing 27.49 g. is a Sestertius. That's the first time I come across such a coin. On obverse, I can read Antoninus Pius. On the reverse, there seems a Roman soldier on a chariot, holding a small statue with his hand open. I can read Roma Aeterna . Please assist me to assess the value of this coin , and try to better identify it. Thank you.. Charles
RIC 621 Antoninus Pius AE Sestertius. ANTONINVS AVG PI-VS P P TR P COS III, laureate head right / ROMA-AETERNA, Roma seated left on throne, holding palladium and spear; shield rests against throne, S-C in ex. Nice coin for sure!
I'm no expert on detecting counterfeit coins, especially on ancients. But something doesn't look right about the coin, could just be me. However, the weight seems about right.
Dionysos.. You always save me. I do owe you a lot, your good self and all the CT family. I shall return it back to the seller tomorrow and try to get some genuine coins. Gratefully Charles
*rats* => sorry 7C (man, I always hate hearing the f-word!!) => ya got that right!! => the dude is "money"
There is something to be learned here. This is a poor fake. A dealer that did not realize it was fake is not a good source for ancients due to his lack of knowledge. A seller who sold it knowing it was a fake is a crook. In either case, get your money back and buy replacements elsewhere.
I agree, it's 'off' and almost certainly a fake...and I have to wonder about the dealer who sold this too.
Good work guys. When I saw the coin before the comments what I saw was a way too squarish jaw, and a ill-proportioned reverse. To borrow an idea from Chinese numismatics, the shenanigans of the coin is all wrong.
I have a similar coin and wondering if mine is fake as well. It's been in my grandfather's collection for about 60 years now and I have always wondered about it. Not sure how to upload here though.
Welcome to Coin Talk. We will really need to see a photo. I think the site has instructions on how to do it. Also, diameter and weight of the coin is helpful too.
