This submission is going to be a learning experience for me, since I know very little about the series. I suppose I want to learn how to grade them, how much premium the rainbow toning brings, and whether I should ever mess with the series again. Opinions on grade, etc, would be much appreciated.

    Okay, here are my grades:

1939-D: NGC MS67, PCGS MS66+ Nice coin, very clean
1939-S: NGC MS65 PCGS MS64 Weak strike, very baggy, nice luster & eye appeal
1940: NGC MS66, PCGS MS65/66 FS (explained in other thread)
1941-D: NGC MS66+, PCGS MS66 (explained in other thread)
1942-D: NGC MS67, PCGS MS66+ Clean surfaces, nice luster, nice color.
    1942: MS64/65 I wouldn't send this one
1944-D: NGC MS66, PCGS MS65 FS Pretty common either way
1945-S: NGC MS66 (maybe), PCGS MS65 TPGs are tough on war nickels.
1946: MS64/65 Weak strike, strange color
1949: NGC MS66+ (possible *), PCGS MS66 This is tough date and your coin has great color. The chatter on the cheek and jaw is remnant planchet roughness and will be ignored by the graders. The luster worries me a little but if you get this in an NGC MS66* holder you will make some money.
1956-D: NGC MS66, PCGS MS65/66 Coin is pretty clean but there is severe die wear and some scattered marks.

I really like the 39-D and the 49. I also like the 42-D, but I wish it had full steps. The war nickels are nice but nothing special and because they are so common, both TPGs hold them to a higher standard.

I really like the 39-D, lets compare it to my avatar for kicks.

You da man, LeHigh. I decided to send in 5 to NGC. The 39-D, 39-S, 42-D, 46, and 49. They'll go out Friday and when they get back I'll post the results. Thanks again!
