I'm wanting to buy a coin that I don't have. I have the following coins: Braided hair half cents Braided hair large cents Flying eagle cents Indian head cents Wheat cents Steel cents 2 cent pieces Silver 3 cent pieces ("trimes") Nickel 3 cent pieces Shield nickels V nickels Buffalo nickels War nickels Liberty seated half dimes Liberty seated dimes Barber dimes Mercury dimes Silver Roosevelt dimes Barber quarters Standing Liberty quarters Silver Washington quarters 40% silver bicentennial quarters Barber half dollars Walking Liberty half dollars Stone Mountain half dollars Franklin half dollars 1964 Kennedy half dollars 40% Kennedy half dollars Morgan dollars Peace dollars Eisenhower dollars American silver eagles Proofs of many different types What would be a good addition to my collection? I'm looking at something that can be acquired in decent condition at a reasonable price. I'd like a 20 cent piece but they're out of my current price range. Give me some ideas.
A seated or bust half is a good idea. Great coins. Another half dollar type could be Washington Carver commems. Or, how about just looking around and seeing if something else interests you. Nothing wrong with US coins, but how about an 1800 year old Roman silver denarius for less than the price of a SL half? How about a medieval Hungarian silver piece, 500 years old, for less than a large cent? Lots of coins out there, lots more choices than just US coins.
I think a capped bust half dollar is a good idea, they can be bought in decent condition for around the same price as an AU/BU Morgan dollar. I got a problem free 1818 capped bust half dollar in G for $45. I have seen them in really bad shape going for $30. For $100 I got a problem free, EF 1834 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Also, What about a Draped Bust Large Cent, the last one minted was minted only 14 years after the U.S. minted opened. They were first minted in 1796 (3 years after the mint first opened) and were done being minted in 1807. You can get a problem coin for $10. I got an 1801 problem free draped bust cent in G for $30. What about a Matron Head large cent, those can be bought in relatively good shape for $10-$15, in the 1830's the minted decided to change the size of large cents to be smaller, so the older large cents are slightly bigger than the Braided Hair Large Cents. I have bought seated quarters in G for $11, and seated half dollars in VG for $32. That is another idea. Coinman,
You can also find some nice early date slabbed ones around F condition for around $100. I picked up a raw 1824/4 in around low AU for $135
If you're buying inexpensive coinage, I would focus on the silver coinage while it remains relatively low in cost. Prices for copper, nickel and clad coins are unlikely to rise nearly as fast if metals move upward on us.
I saw a certified 20 cent piece in G-6 that sold for $85. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-20-C...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
This auction confuses me, see why? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-20c-...48?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item5b081480c4
pick the coin YOU would enjoy looking at over and over and over again. for a price you can afford. I would choose a mercury dime in mint state.
But I want so many coins! I wanted some ideas of some coins that I don't already have. As far as a mint Mercury dime, I already have some. I do have a weakness for circulated Mercury dimes with patina. I can't resist a nice looking Mercury dime.
Bust or seated half can buy a nice one for $50-60. I'd say a trade (not raw) or a 20cent if you get a bit more flush
