Cleaning a low-value modern proof coin

I found this 1994-s while CRH'ing. I'd throw it back, but I'm trying to get all of the "S" mint Kennedys by searching myself and this is the first 1994 I've found in almost a year.

    Acetone did nothing.

Short of using a toothbrush and some harsh cleaning agent, is there any way to get the unknown black substance off without totally losing the "proof-like" surface?

Probably not but I wanted to ask.

    Thanks.

I think that one's a lost cause. You could try and dip it, but my guess is it's already damaged.

It's a 1992-S, not a 1994-S. Regardless, it looks like it was buried and has now corroded.

Like others have said, you can try blasting it with dip and an acetone wash but it appears it will come out corroded.

That is a poor and unfortunate proof coin.

Yeah. I feel sorry for it.

The reverse still looks kind of cool...

I do a little "dirt fishing" and get a few that look like that. Don't waste your time/$ trying to clean it as what's underneath will look even worse if exposed, buy some coffee with it and all others like it.

I have found several of these in my last few boxes also. By the smell of them I'd say they were in a fire. The person who tossed them into circulation after the fire had a pretty good idea of the value now. so, if the damage is done, what harm is there in trying. Dip it. Rinse it. and then keep it or spend it depending on how it turns out. You may learn something about dipping and cleaning that will be more valuable on a more important coin in the future.

You can't hurt it. Dip the heck out of it. Make a pocket piece out of it.
