Looking for some help on the following items: A curious piece made of animal bone that came with a collection of Annam coins. Thanks in advance...
Deer etched on a Bronze coin. 29.8mm, 7.3g, 1.4mm Reverse is completely worn. Any ideas what this may be? Has anyone seen these types of etchings before?
Does anyone know where I might be able to get some info on Mexican counterfeit strikes? Silver vs. Brass
I have an 1883 " V" coin that may go along with this thread ? it has metal turn and maybe to fool some one into thinking it was $5 Gold ??
Deacon, yours is a counterfeit, not a "racketeer nickel". My guess struck long after the fact as a cheap curio item. Jlblonde, the second silver piece looks like a medieval german pfenning bracteates. The first one almost looks like the remnants of a byzantine scyphate.
Don't know of a reference dealing with these particular denominations, but they are rather common. Sometimes you find them with some of the silver wash intact, but usually worn down to the underlying metal like yours are.
Thanks Medoraman! I found an interesting article on German pfenning bracteates: Bracteates – the Thinnest Coins of Monetary http://sunflower.ch/pdf/yesterday/04_Middle_Ages/01(01) Bracteates the Thinnest Coins of Monetary History.pdf
As far as the two little silver coins go, here's some basic info: Coin #1 - 12.9mm (at the widest points), 0.2g Silver Coin #2 - 12.8mm, 0.4g Silver
The deer etched coin is probably from Yunnan Province or northern Burma, late 19th century, not a coin, but more like a hobo nickel copying some Yunnan provincial issues depicting a stag or stag heads.
Here's a stag head tael from the WWII period, the type goes back farther and is based on Burmese issues. http://coins.ha.com/itm/french-indo...ch-nicer-than-usually-encounte/a/425-51187.s#
Here's an earlier Burmese type, slightly more stylized. http://www.ebay.com/itm/18th-circa-...0742145?pt=Asian_Antiques&hash=item2599009501
