A friend has me sell stuff on ebay occasionally, and he brought this coin over. He thinks it's worth a lot, but after reading this forum for a while, I have to ask is it real or fake?
Kirk: I thought that it was real until I looked at the shapes of the CC, I don't recall any where the right C is larger than the left one, unless that is the photo and they are the same size.
It is way too low grade to be a fake, people fake MS-65s not fines. As Bonedigger says, it is a $50 dollar coin or so.
I would strongly disagree---I've had some fake coins and both of them were low VG-F coins....the guys that fake coins want to make them look worn and used... Speedy
Speedy: I agree, I have a great Seated 1/2 that is a definite fake, made of brass, with the silver plate worn off. It is a contemporary counterfeit. They are nice collectibles.
I too have many fakes that range from no dat I think this coin in the picture is ok.e SLQ's to G-F Washingtons. I think this coin in question is ok. One way to make sure is to weigh it. Its not a surefire way but it certainly rules out a majority of the fakes.
Yes, but this coin COULD not be a silver over brass, because by the time it would be this worn, the plating would have came off. Also, it wouldn't tone so deep. I have seen fakes of valuable coins in low condition, but no-one still fakes fine condition seated halves...
It looks real to me. I was comparing it to the one in coinfacts, and all the stars and all look right. Even the date. So my guess is that it is real. Phoenix
