1954 S nickel - strange rim

    The coin is a 1954 S nickel in a PCGS slab. A large portion of the rim on the reverse has a strange cud-like appearance. Anyone know what's up here?

    Maybe photos of the entire coin would help, both obverse and reverse.

    From what I see it is the clear gasket that PCGS uses overlapping the coin

    Yep, looks like part of the holder it is in. It's clear, and sometimes overlaps the coin a bit.

    PCGS uses a wide prong. One of the photos shows a narrow span, so it couldn't be a PCGS holder.

    Can you show a pic of the whole coin? That would really help resolve this.

    I still think it's part of the holder/gasket. ANACS is really bad for having overlap

    You guys are right...looks like it's excess plastic from the slab...ha ha!!

    I'm not sure about that. That is why I asked for photos, obverse and reverse, of the entire coin.
